The internet has become one giant machine designed to convince parents they’re failing, and I am so not here for it. Every scroll tells you there’s a new thing you’re doing wrong - a new way you’re accidentally causing trauma, a new reason your child will need therapy. And somewhere in that mess, our generation got sold a lie: That being human is dangerous, and if you lose your patience, you’ve damaged attachment, if you yell, you’ve caused trauma, and if you’re not calm, regulated, and perfectly responsive every second of every day, you’re ruining your child.

As a therapist, I need you to know: That is not what the science says.

And listen, I understand why this fear hits so hard. We are the generation trying to do it differently. We’re reading the books, listening to the podcasts, learning about nervous systems, attachment, emotional safety, trauma, and mental health. We’re trying to understand the stuff we inherited so we don’t pass it down. I genuinely love that for us.

But somewhere along the way, an important truth got distorted. Children do need emotional safety, yes. Children do not need perfection. And we need to get into the weeds of it, because that distinction is super important.
