You tell your child, very calmly, “Hey buddy, next time let’s use a different tone,” and suddenly they’re sobbing so hard they can barely breathe. I mean like devastated, running to their room yelling, “I’M THE WORST KID EVER.”

Or, they make one small mistake on homework and immediately crumple the paper, hide under the table, and completely shut down. You watch them go from perfectly fine to emotionally flooded in under ten seconds flat.

Maybe you accidentally sound slightly frustrated answering a question and they instantly snap back, “You’re mad at me!!!” even though you genuinely weren’t. They lose a game and act less like someone who lost Candy Land and more like a disgraced CEO being escorted out of a corporate building with a cardboard box of personal belongings. A friend didn’t want to play with them at recess and that led to HOURS of spiraling on the rejection of it all.

And what’s confusing is that even when you’re gentle - even when you’re actively trying to be careful, soft, not make it feel personal or harsh - the reaction still feels enormous. You’re sitting there thinking, “Okkk, I didn’t yell. I didn’t shame. I barely even said anything.”

Why does every tiny disappointment feel like it detonates inside them?? Why does “please try again” land like “you are fundamentally bad”? Why does one awkward social interaction suddenly become “No one likes me.” “I’m weird.” “I ruin everything.”
