I’m a sucker for waffles. I love that each little pocket is perfect for syrup and butter. I love the crisp exterior and soft interior. I love a weekend at home with a big batch of batter and a lot of friends. I even love the waffles at continental breakfasts, or maybe I especially love the waffles at continental breakfasts. But Minneapolis is a pancake town. Each one of our top three diners has a chokehold on a portion of the population. Al’s, Ideal Diner, and Our Kitchen are known for their takes on pancakes–and other restaurants try to keep up.
I went on the hunt for my favorite waffles in the Twin Cities. I ate 22 waffles over 18 months. I found five I wanted to order again and again: a classic diner waffle, a Belgian waffle, a waffle at a berry patch, a savory waffle that you wouldn’t guess is gluten-free, and a vegan waffle with rotating flavors.
Why is this piece behind a paywall?
Most of my pieces are free, outside of a paywall. Pieces like this take a long time, require a lot of research, and cost more than my average pieces do to write. I don’t have a company card or a salary, I just have people like you! By becoming a paid subscriber, you help me fund more long-term projects like this one.
