Finding wide/ toe box shoes suitable for formal occasions can be tricky, as I’m sure you’re well aware! Unless the shoe is well designed, a wide toe box can often lend a casual appearance, or even an alternative one (which made it comparatively easy to create my list of wide toe box shoes for punks and goths).

Regardless, here is my selection of foot-friendly shoes that can be dressed up or down. Truly dressy options remain limited, so a number of the shoes here have a semi-casual look.

Depending on your foot shape and width, some of these could be considered more of a “compromise shoe,” in that they might not provide quite as much toe room to be comfortable for everyday wear. Though keep in mind a few of them have been designed to be longer in the toe box to cleverly disguise how wide the toe actually is.

Most of the shoes have varying degrees of heel elevation, ranging from a few millimeters to several inches high. There are a handful of zero drop shoes included, but none fall under the strict requirements of a barefoot shoe1. The heel heights are designated like this:

(ZD) = zero drop; flat soles with cushion
(LH) = low heel
(H) = high heel

Barefoot shoes are characterized by having completely flat, thin soles that are extremely flexible, while also having a foot-shaped toe box to enable the toes to spread out. They are meant to be as close to being shoeless as possible.
