Why capable, intelligent people still feel stuck—and the personalized blueprint that changes everything.

Thanks for reading Better Questions: Timeless Wisdom, Modern Mind! Subscribe for free to receive new posts and support my work.

If you’ve been reading this Substack for any amount of time, you know most of what I share here is conversation.

I interview people from different backgrounds and time periods—asking questions, pulling wisdom out of minds smarter than mine, letting their insights do the work.

But every once in a while, something wants to bubble out and I feel compelled to share the conversation I’ve been having with myself, because I think it’ll help others.

This is one of those moments.

This is a Substack I hope will be something you can sit with. Something that you come back to because it’s practical and useful. And something that might shift how you think about how you operate over the next 90 days (and more importantly) how your mind supports or undermines what you desire over this time period.

I’m going to share a framework I’ve been building for years now. Not to sell you on it—though I’ll mention it at the end if you’re curious—but because I think it solves a problem almost no one is talking about.

And if you take nothing else from this, I want you to walk away with a clearer sense of how to design a mental fitness blueprint and system that actually works for you.

So let’s dig in. And yes, it’s much longer than my regular write-up’s, but we’re building a system for your mind, that takes a few more words! Grab a coffee and let’s get a plan to dial-in that beautiful mind of yours!

The Pattern That Won’t Go Away

Here’s what I kept seeing over the last decade.

500+ conversations on the podcast. A bestselling book on mental resilience. A journaling app that reached 86 million people. Boardrooms, university classrooms, speaking stages around the world.

And across all of it, one pattern kept showing up:

Capable, intelligent people who know what to do—but still feel overwhelmed, stuck, or out of alignment.

They’ve read the books. They understand the concepts. They can articulate what needs to change. But we know, insight alone doesn’t move the needle.

And I finally realized what was missing.

We have detailed strategies for our businesses. Quarterly goals. Revenue targets. Content calendars. Launch plans. But when our minds start looping on doubt, or rushing from urgency, or bracing for failure, we don’t have a system.

We just white-knuckle through it and hope we don’t burn out before the finish line.

We would never build a business without a plan. But we try to build our lives without a plan for our minds.

That disconnect is what this Substack is about.

The Real Problem

Let me give you a concrete example.

You launch something. You put yourself out there. You create something meaningful.

And then one of two things happens:

Either you succeed and your nervous system doesn’t know how to receive it. So you keep waiting for the other shoe to drop. You downplay the win. You immediately shift to the next problem.

Or you hit a setback, a failed launch, a business that didn’t work, a chapter that didn’t go as planned and five, seven, ten years later, you’re still carrying that residue.

Still bracing or still shrinking your expectations to protect yourself from disappointment.

Neither of those is a strategy problem.

That’s a mental operating pattern problem.

And the frustrating part? You can see it happening. You can name the pattern and you know you’re overthinking, rushing and/or protecting yourself (this is actually the topic for my next book, I’m 35,000 words in, I’ll take any good vibes you’re willing to send!).

But knowing doesn’t change the behavior.

Because behavior change doesn’t come from insight. It comes from designing practices around how your mind actually operates.

That’s what we’re going to build today, together.

My Core Thesis

Here’s what I’m proposing:

Your mental fitness is as strategic and important (if not more important) than your business model.

And just like you wouldn’t build a business without a plan, you can’t build sustainable momentum without understanding your mental operating pattern and designing a system around it.

Not a generic system. Not someone else’s morning routine.

Your system. Built for how you actually work.

Where We’re Going

So here’s the roadmap.

First, I’m going to show you why most mental fitness approaches don’t work and what needs to be different.

Then, I’m going to walk you through the five core components every mental fitness system needs. Think of these as the blueprint architecture.

And finally, I’m going to give you the practical tools to build your own version, whether you want to spend the time doing that yourself, or whether you’d rather use something I’ve already built. Either way, I hope it’s a win for you.

The goal is to make sure you leave this Substack with a plan for your mind that’s as clear as the plan for your business, or whatever personal goals you set for this year.

Why Most Mental Fitness Approaches Fail

Before we build anything, we need to understand why most mental fitness content doesn’t stick so we don’t repeat those mistakes.

I see three core reasons:

One: It’s Generic

“Meditate every morning. Journal for 10 minutes. Practice gratitude.”

Great advice. But for who?

What if your mental operating pattern requires space and time to process before you act? Then rushing into a structured morning routine might actually make things worse.

Or what if your stress shows up as rumination, not agitation? The practices that calm someone else’s nervous system might completely miss the mark for you.

Generic doesn’t work because we don’t all operate the same way.

Two: It’s Disconnected from Your Actual Goals

Most mental fitness content exists in a vacuum.

“Be more present. Reduce stress. Find balance.”

Okay. But what if you’re launching a product in 90 days? What if you’re navigating a life transition? What if you’re trying to book speaking gigs and your scarcity reflex keeps whispering “it won’t work” every time you hit send on an outreach email? Speaking from experience with that last one…

Your mental fitness plan needs to serve your goals, not just exist alongside them.

Three: It Doesn’t Account for What Happens When You Fall Off Track

Everyone talks about building habits.

Nobody talks about what happens when life gets messy. When routines break. When pressure spikes and you lose your rhythm.

If your system doesn’t include a compassionate, repeatable way to get back on track—without guilt or shame—it’s not a system.

It’s just a list of things you’ll eventually feel bad about not doing.

And that’s the trap most people fall into.

They know what to do. They just don’t have a system that works with how they actually operate.

The Blueprint Architecture: What Actually Works

So if most approaches fail for those reasons, what actually works?

After building this for myself and refining it over the last year, I’ve landed on something simple:

A mental fitness system needs to do three things:

One: Understand How You’re Wired

Not in a clinical diagnosis way. In a “this is how my mind processes pressure, makes decisions, and recovers from setbacks” way.

Because you have a pattern. Everyone does. Some people need space and clarity before committing and rushing decisions makes things worse for them. Others thrive in motion but burn out without recovery. Others process through feeling first, thinking second.

None of these are better or worse. They’re just different. And once you name your pattern, everything else gets easier.

Because you stop fighting how you’re wired and start working with it.

Two: Connect to What You’re Actually Building

Your mental fitness plan can’t exist in a vacuum. It needs to serve the outcomes you’re trying to create in the next 90 days. Not vague aspirations like “be less stressed” or “find balance.”

Real outcomes and lear direction with specific emotional states that support the work.

Three: Build in a Recovery System

When you fall off track (and you will) you need a clear, compassionate way to get back on.

Not “try harder.” Not “start over Monday.” A protocol and system that you can deploy in the moment and be running proactively in the background.

Because without this, your entire system collapses the first time life gets messy.

Those three things—understanding your wiring, connecting to your goals, and building in recovery—that’s the foundation.

Why This Matters Now

I want to zoom out for a second.

Because here’s why building a personalized mental fitness system matters more than ever. Before mass education, knowledge was passed down through apprenticeship.

A blacksmith didn’t hand his apprentice a manual and say “figure it out.”

He worked alongside them. Corrected their grip in real time. Pointed out mistakes as they happened. Learning happened through experience, not information.

Then we industrialized education. We needed to train thousands of workers quickly. So we created the lecture model: one teacher, many students, standardized curriculum.

This, I think we can all agree, is widely outdated. And we’ve been stuck here for decades.

But now, for the first time since the apprenticeship model, we can have personalized, interactive guidance at scale. Using technology. Using information from the smartest minds of all time.

Not through one-size-fits-all courses. Through systems that adapt to how you actually operate.

How to Build Your Own Mental Fitness Blueprint

Alright. Let’s get practical.

If you want to build your own mental fitness system, here’s exactly how to do it:

Step 1: Self-Assessment (15-20 minutes)

Grab a journal. Answer these questions honestly:

  1. Clarity: How clear am I about what matters most right now?

  2. Stress Load: How often does my mind feel overloaded?

  3. Emotional Agility: Can I shift states when needed, or do I get stuck?

  4. Focus: Can I direct attention reliably?

  5. Rumination: How much mental looping happens—replaying past failures or worrying about future outcomes?

  6. Adaptability: When plans change, do I adjust quickly or spiral?

  7. Recovery: Do I wake up restored, or am I carrying yesterday’s tension?

Just notice the patterns. Write down what you see. You can create a scoring system or incorporate question sets with scales—that’s what I did for the Mental Fitness Blueprint—but simply noticing the patterns puts you ahead of most people.

Step 2: Name Your Operating Pattern

Based on those answers, what’s your pattern?

Do you need space and time before acting?

Do you thrive in motion but struggle with stillness?

Do you feel first and think second?

There’s no right answer. The goal is self-awareness.

You might want some help with this. Experiment. Toss your answers into your go-to AI platform and ask it to surface any mental patterns it sees based on your responses.

Don’t stop there, that’s where most people make the mistake, ask the AI to prompt you.

“What other information do you need from me to help spot my patterns?”

Hell, ask it to take on the voice of Carl Jung in the first person, as if he was sitting directly in front of you having this conversation.

You’ll be amazed at what transpires. And ignore the AI haters. People have a lot of opinions when it comes to AI, until they have an experience that blows their mind. Because then it becomes useful for them.

And that’s the question I always return to: Is this useful?

I’ve never had a chat with Carl Jung (and I’ve had many for the research of my next book) that have not been useful.

Use the tools, play around and follow your curiosity, and once you get there, name your pattern.

Step 3: Set Your 90-Day Direction

Define your desired outcomes for the season, the emotional states you want to cultivate, and your orienting principle.

Example:

  • Outcome: Launch my new offer and book three speaking gigs

  • States: Confident. Resilient. Playful.

  • Principle: Build from alignment, not urgency

Write it down. Put it somewhere you’ll see daily.

Step 4: Design Your Daily Rituals

Pick 2-3 practices that match your operating pattern.

Think about what actually works for you: What practices quiet your mind when it’s spinning? (Stillness, breathwork, journaling, walking in nature)

What activities prime and motivate your mind when you need momentum? (Movement, music, expressive writing, connection with others).

Choose practices you know support you, not what sounds good on paper and keep it simple. Complexity is the killer to consistency.

Step 5: Write Your Reset Protocol

Three steps:

  1. Pause (60 seconds): Name the pattern. Take five slow breaths.

  2. Reset (5-25 minutes): Choose one—walk, stillness, movement, sauna, music.

  3. Re-enter (2 minutes): Ask: “What’s the next clean action?” Write it. Do it.

That’s it.

You now have a mental fitness blueprint. This is the core. You can expand from here and play around.

For example, in the Blueprint I designed, I asked AI to create daily reflective prompts to support me for the duration of the 90 days. Each week has a clear theme guiding my mind and helps expand my operating range (daily!) to best support what I’m looking to achieve over this season.

It’s been so powerful.

How to Actually Implement It

Having the blueprint is one thing. Actually using it is another. Here’s how to implement without turning this into another thing you feel guilty about:

Rule 1: Start with One Daily Anchor

Don’t try to do everything on day one. Pick the practice that feels most aligned right now. Often, for most people, that’s something in the movement or stillness areas.

Do that for seven days. Then add the next one.

Rule 2: Use Weekly Check-ins as Your Recalibration Point

Every Sunday (or whatever day works), spend 10 minutes answering:

  1. What worked this week?

  2. What adjustment would help next week?

  3. What can I celebrate about this week?

No judgment, just data to then make information decisions moving forward. No different from what you would do in your business or whatever job your hold.

Rule 3: Deploy the Reset Protocol Immediately

The first time you feel off, don’t wait, don’t push through. Pause. Reset. Re-enter.

The faster you do this, the less energy you waste.

Rule 4: Treat This as a Living System

The practices will evolve and your needs will change. Some weeks you’ll need more stillness and others more movement.

Let adaptation and flexibility work for you, allow your system to flex based on what will support you best.

What This Actually Unlocks

Here’s what happens when you actually build and use a personalized mental fitness system: You notice when your pattern shows up and now you don’t let it dictate your actions.

You reset, and you keep moving. You expand your operating range.

The things that used to trigger overthinking or rushing start losing their grip. You recover faster. You stay steady longer. You consistently step into the person you’re striving to become. Not through fake-it-till-you-make-it energy. Through repeated experience of operating from alignment.

When you have a system for your mind that matches the system you have for your business or whatever goals and desires you have for the next 90 days, you stop leaking energy.

You’re not spending 40% of your cognitive bandwidth managing doubt, managing urgency, managing old stories.

You’re directing that energy toward the work and intentions that actually matter. And that matter to you, not someone else.

That’s the transformation. And it happens quietly. Week by week. Reset by reset. Action by action.

The Apprenticeship Model Returns

Earlier I mentioned the shift from apprenticeship to mass education. What’s happening now is we’re looping back.

Not to one-on-one coaching, though that has value, but to systems that learn how you operate and adapt in real time.

A static course can’t do that. A generic morning routine can’t do that. But a personalized system, one that understands your operating pattern, your stress expression, and your recovery needs can.

And that’s what we just walked through and also what I’ve been building, leveraging technology to help connect all the dots and recognize the patterns we naturally miss.

Not to replace the work of figuring yourself out but to compress the time it takes to understand how to most effectively operate in this season of your life.

You could spend years trying to figure out your mental patterns and how to expand your operating range. And in some cases, some people never figure this out.

It doesn’t have to be this way. Let’s leverage the tools we have today and keep evolving as they evolve. Most people I talk to don’t have months to spare to figure out how to create this system.

They’re already stretched and juggling too much. They need something that works now, not six months from now after they’ve iterated through three failed systems.

So I built it. To be clear, I’m “building it“ the beta is ready for the founding cohort, and I’m constantly iterating and upgrading the Mental Fitness Blueprint.

The current system takes 20 minutes to provide the information it needs to generate your blueprint.

It’s not magic. It’s 30+ pages of prompting in the background to get this level of detail, output, and execution. But more than that, it’s a decade of studying and integrating what the greatest minds do day in and day out. If I’m being honest, I haven’t been this excited since co-founding our journaling app that reached over 90 million people. I feel alive and I hope you will too!

I’m having a blast pulling this all together. But more importantly, whether you use my system or build your own, I can say it’s been incredibly useful for resetting and reframing my mind in a moment’s notice. Coming back to my core question—”Is this useful?”—the answer has been a resounding yes!

Where You Go From Here

So you’ve got options.

Option 1: Take Everything I Just Shared and Build Your Own System

You’ve got the framework, the five components and the implementation strategy. You know what questions to ask and how to design practices around your pattern.

Go do it. Experiment and have fun with the process. Use the tools you want to experiment with.

Try out ChatGPT, Claude, or the vibecoding apps like Base44 and Loveable. That’s how I started and I already feel like I joined a masterclass to figure these out.

Option 2: Use What I’ve Already Built

I created a Mental Fitness Blueprint system that does all of this for you, and I’m continually evolving the whole system.

You fill out an assessment then get a personalized blueprint delivered to you.

It includes:

  • Your current mental fitness scores (focus, clarity, recovery, etc.)

  • Your mental operating pattern

  • Your 90-day direction

  • Daily and weekly practices tailored to how you work

  • A reset protocol

  • 90 days of reflective questions

  • A one-page snapshot you can reference daily

  • Guidance and direct counsel from ancient teachers (I’m going to do a whole other write-up on this one alone, because through technology it is unreal what’s possible from setting up your own personalized mentor group with people like Rumi, Carl Jung, Maya Angelou...)

The current version is in beta mode and I’m keeping it small—50 people—because I want real feedback and touch points to refine this before I scale it.

If you’re here early, you’re helping shape what this becomes and you’ll be getting first access to all future iterations.

Here’s the link to register if you’re interested.

Of course I’d love for you to be part of the founding cohort. But here’s what I’ll say: The only path that doesn’t work is doing nothing.

Leaving your mind on autopilot turns you into a mental health statistic, that’s the unfortunate reality of the world we live in.

So do something for your mind. You deserve that, and we all win.
