I was catching up with a friend recently. She’s navigating life after divorce — three kids, multiple schools, a business to run. Needless to say, a full life in every direction, and she’s feeling the effects of this in her business.
There was one thing in particular that she mentioned that really stayed in my mind. When her business was thriving, she had a specific routine, set of habits and a reliable system. A way of doing things that worked. And now — through no fault of her own — that system was blown up. The circumstances changed and the structure that once held everything together no longer fits the life she’s actually living.
She’s not alone in this.
Life changes. Sometimes we choose it. Sometimes it chooses us. A divorce. A new city. Kids getting older. A team that doubles in size. A health scare. A loss. The list is long and typically doesn’t ask for our permission.
And yet — what I’ve noticed happens with high performers…
They keep running (forcing) the old system in the new environment because that system allowed them to win. But now it’s not, it’s actually doing the opposite.
That’s what we’re unpacking today.
The trap that trips us up.
Successful routines work, until they don’t.
And because they worked — really worked — we hold onto them like they are the only way to thrive. The 5am wake-up, the weekly planning ritual, the deep work blocks, and the training schedule. All great habits, but they were also evidence that we knew how to perform.
So when life shifts and the system stops working, we don’t question the system, we question ourselves.
Why can’t I just do what I used to do?
Let me answer that one. Because the life you built that system for no longer exists.
Let’s not judge ourselves for that, it’s just the reality. The gap between who you were and the environment you’re actually in now — that’s where the real cost lives. You’re measuring yourself against a version of your life that’s evolved into something different.
Our gut instinct is to push and jam the old system into the new reality with the hopes that something reforms, but that rarely works. We need to pause and design a new system.
Here’s how to start. This doesn’t take a full day. It takes a few honest minutes but has days, weeks and years worth of impact.
Step 1
Name what’s actually changed. Not what you wish was different — what is genuinely different right now. Time, energy, structure, responsibilities. Get specific. You can’t adapt to a reality you won’t look at directly.
Step 2
Identify where you’re running the old system. Where are you still expecting yourself to perform like you did before the change? That gap — between the old blueprint and the new reality — is where most of the frustration lives.
Step 3
Build the adapted version. Smaller. Tighter. Designed for the life you have right now, not the one you had. What’s the one habit, one anchor, one non-negotiable that still fits? Start there. Build from that. This is how you turn constraints into competitive advantages. You tighten your plan and execute pro-level focus and mental fitness.
The goal is to appreciate what previously worked, and evolve to find the version of your best plan that fits now.
Your circumstances changed. That’s real. But so is your ability to adapt — if you give yourself the space to do it. That’s the real edge.
