Headlines That Won’t Stress You Out

Sometimes the best news stories aren’t about championships—they’re about family.

During the FIFA World Cup, Cape Verde’s goalkeeper, Vozinha, captured the world’s attention with his remarkable performance against soccer powerhouse Spain. But after the match, it wasn’t his spectacular saves that brought him to tears. It was the fact that his mother wasn’t there to see it.

Because of travel and visa complications, she had been unable to make the trip to the United States. When the story became public, people from multiple governments and organizations worked together to help make it happen. Just days later, she received permission to travel and was able to watch her son play in person.

It’s a reminder that amid headlines often filled with division and conflict, there are still moments when people choose compassion over politics and cooperation over disagreement.

As Christians, stories like this point us toward something even deeper.

Throughout Scripture, we see that God delights in reunions.

Jacob and Esau embraced after years of separation. Joseph wept as he was reunited with his brothers. The father in Jesus’ parable ran to embrace his prodigal son before the son could even finish his apology. Again and again, the Bible reminds us that reconciliation and restored relationships are at the very heart of God’s kingdom.

Perhaps that is why the Apostle Paul writes, “Rejoice with those who rejoice” (Romans 12:15). Sometimes one person’s joy becomes a gift for all of us.

It’s easy to believe the world is becoming colder. Then a story like this reminds us that kindness still exists, families still matter, and there is something profoundly hopeful about a mother finally getting to watch her son fulfill a lifelong dream.

The kingdom of God often grows in moments just like these—not always through grand miracles, but through ordinary acts of compassion that reflect the heart of Christ.

May we be people who help create more reunions, offer more encouragement, and celebrate the joys of others as if they were our own.

Join us as we explore what happens when God’s call interrupts our plans and discover the good news that even when we run, God’s grace continues to pursue us.

We’ll also gather around the Lord’s Table to celebrate the God who never stops calling us home.

As we begin our new sermon series, Jonah, we’ll prepare our hearts through the timeless hymn “Just As I Am, Without One Plea” and close with the beloved “Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing.” These songs remind us that God’s grace welcomes us just as we are, pursues us when we wander, and continually calls us back to Himself.

As we gather around the Lord’s Table this Communion Sunday, may our worship remind us that no one can outrun the love and mercy of God.
