Greetings from a hellishly hot Los Angeles, where we are on our fifth consecutive day of 90+ degree weather in mid-March. I’m absolutely not ready for it to be suffocatingly hot yet, but the global warming of it all has other ideas. It feels like a glitch in the simulation, seeing Easter bunnies and hot pink Peeps everywhere I go while sweating through my clothes by 11AM. I should be out in the world wearing a brown cardigan; instead, I am inside running the air conditioning on the first day of spring.
I’ve spent most of this week attempting to dodge a climate anxiety spiral while watching my daughter splash around in a blue plastic pool in our backyard, wondering if March swimming is the new normal. It feels a bit like I am hallucinating July, but since the sun does not seem to be backing down, I suppose I had better stop complaining and start surrendering.
Last week, I sent you all a little list of what was keeping me sane, and I decided to do it again this week since I am still trying to stay sane. I’ll try to make this a weekly list since we are all in need of sanity-inducing behaviors, especially those of us who are already living in the summer of 2026.
LISTENING: Bethany’s Version: Earlier this week I was in Old Navy (only God can judge me), and they were playing “The Less I Know the Better” by Tame Impala. I truly had forgotten how hard that song slaps. Best Coast played Shaky Knees Fest in Atlanta in 2015 on the same day as Tame Impala, and I watched them side stage, maybe or maybe not, whilst tripping on psychedelics, hehehehe. Hearing that bassline while standing next to a gigantic wall lined with $6 flip-flops hit me with a flavor of nostalgia I haven’t experienced in a while. In 2015, a random heatwave was an excuse for a pool party, not a reminder of a collapsing ecosystem! I didn’t need to worry about a toddler’s SPF levels back then; I could simply vibe side stage while getting lost in the sickest light show I’ve ever seen. Anyway, great song, great band, and great year (2015, that is).
Luna’s Version: This week, Luna can not get enough of Chappel Roan’s “Pink Pony Club.” There was a period of time where this was the only thing that could get her to stop crying, and while I do enjoy this song, I was relieved when that phase ended. Much like me and my Tame Impala x Old Navy moment, Luna had her own “Pink Pony Club” flashback when it came on a random playlist while we were playing in the backyard. At 15 months old, the kid loves to groove already, and the moment that chorus beat dropped, she tossed her wooden ice cream cone aside and bopped that little diaper butt up and down.
WATCHING: Most of you probably already know I am a devoted Bravo fan, but what I have not been ready to talk about is how The Real Housewives franchise has stopped working for me since having a child!!! Something about hearing grown women yell at each other is no longer fun now that I am begging a small, not-yet-a-woman to put her shoes on 45 times a day. Maybe someday it will work for me the way it used to, but until then, I am a Summer House ride or die fan. If you’ve never watched Summer House, the premise is simple: a group of friends who live and work in Manhattan escape to a house in the Hamptons every single weekend from Memorial Day to Labor Day. It’s mindless television at its finest, but (most of) the characters are actually, truly likable. My queen, Ciara, is a gorgeous and vulnerable professional model who worked as a frontline ICU nurse during the pandemic. She has big “I’ve seen some shit” energy, so she does not put up with the ridiculous antics of some of her housemates. This season is one of my favorites yet - enough drama to keep you hooked but not enough to raise your actual cortisol levels.
DOING: Thanks to my little stroll down memory lane at Old Navy and the song “Go Away” that I did with Weezer in 2014 having its moment in the sun, I’ve been excavating my own archives a lot this past week. I’ve been revisiting old demos, old photos, and old journals, and it’s been really healing for me. It’s nice to be reminded of who I was before I was someone’s mom and before the world felt as heavy to hold as it does now. It feels a bit like going through a storage unit, but the storage unit is … me! I’ve tucked away a lot of parts of myself over the last few years, but revisiting them has reminded me that those parts are still in there, and slowly but surely, I am finding my way back to them.
Using: Given the extreme temperature, there are a lot of tank tops currently being worn by all of Los Angeles. I am not usually an “anti aging” product kind of gal, but if there is one area of my body I am insecure about looking older, it is my chest. Enter: Uber Youth Neck & Chest Super Lift Serum Spray. I’m a side sleeper, and what almost 40 years of side sleeping will do to you is give you some weird cleavage wrinkles! They are not weird; wrinkles are normal and just a part of life! I’m not here to demonize wrinkles, but I am here to tell you about a spray that will change your freaking life if you, like me, are insecure about the ones on your chest. I got served an ad for this product on Instagram about a million times before I finally gave in and bought it. It is a magic potion, truly. Within one use, my skin was smoother than I’ve seen it in years. A little spritz and a rub, and you’re good to go. 10/10 game-changing product for me, and they did not pay me or give me anything for free to say this!
What are you currently listening to/watching/doing/using to help you stay sane?
Until next time, xoxo.
