Llama Beta Fellowship
The fund for the agent-native era.
The Llama Beta Fellowship is our commitment to this generation. Twenty founders. Up to $2M per company. $40M committed to this batch alone. The Fellowship isn’t just capital — it’s a curated room where the operators, engineers, and category leaders shaping the agent-native era gather to help these twenty ship. From Fellowship, teams graduate into our early-stage portfolio; through late-stage SPVs, they gain exposure to the category leaders they’re building alongside.
Investing where conviction begins.
📅 Coming up
Friday 7/25 YC Startup School Founder & Investor Mixer
An intimate rooftop mixer the night YC Startup School kicks off — bringing together the founders arriving in San Francisco with the investors actively backing what comes next, hosted by Beta Fund and Llama Venture.
No panels. No slides. No pitches. Just a curated room of the people building — and funding — the AI-native ecosystem, over drinks above the fog.
Friday 8/7 Snowflake X Beta Fund Agent & Token Economy Hackathon
Every agent needs a wallet. Every wallet settles in tokens. Build the first agent-native economies at Snowflake HQ.
Ship the Next · Alibaba Cloud X AMD Agent Builder Day
50 teams and 200+ builders packed Computer History Museum on July 16 for the kickoff of a 3-week build sprint to Demo Day on August 15. Alibaba Cloud's Compute & Storage team ran table hosts and live tutorials on Qwen, FC Sandbox, and ACS;
The founders panel — Xincheng Ma (Head of Engineering, OpenArt), Shuhao Zhang (CPO, Tinyfish), Rong Yan (CTO, HeyGen), and Siqi He (Head of Product, Pika) — talked about shipping agents in production. A few things worth stealing:
Xincheng Ma (OpenArt) shared a metric worth stealing: token consumption per user is their north-star health signal. Not sessions, not DAU — token spend, trending up. Their multi-step pipeline surfaces the agent plan to users at each stage and shows partial outputs (draft images, short clips) early, so users can steer before an expensive generation runs. Transparency-then-magic, not magic-then-reveal. If you’re building an agent product without a token-spend curve on your dashboard, you’re flying blind on the only metric that actually maps to product-market fit for autonomous software.
Rong Yan (HeyGen) framed the split between agent-as-creator and agent-as-assistant as a function of how objective the work is. HeyGen sees agents fully replace the workflow on message-first video — their enterprise driver product runs at 100k videos/day. Under the hood: a 3-layer model stack — Avatar 3, 4, 5 — matched per task. Not a race to the cheapest model. A portfolio. The lesson for anyone building at the model layer: your job is fit-for-purpose orchestration, not a benchmark bake-off.
Siqi He (Pika) drew the ceiling on the creative side. Agents have to stay assistants for film and drama because they can’t yet interpret subjective direction. “Make this feel more…” is still human. That gap isn’t a solved problem — it’s the boundary between agent-native categories and taste-driven ones. Which is the honest map for the current wave: automate objective outputs, augment subjective ones. Anyone selling “AI film director” today is either lying or has not shipped.
Unanimous across the room: quality still beats cost. Cheaper models lose users. Two years into the price war, retention runs on trust.
And a shared framing worth naming — the prototype-to-launch gap is a pivot signal, not a bug. If customers won’t tolerate the gap, the value prop isn’t strong enough. Treat the gap as an indicator of whether you have the right customer.
