What happened last week?
Last Saturday at Memory Genesis Competition 2026 Demo Day. We are proud to announce a $25,000 direct investment prize awarded to the AI Data Technician team at the Memory Genesis Competition 2026, hosted by EverMind and Shanda Group. While the industry remains fixated on raw compute, our investment thesis focuses on memory as the "soul" of the agentic stack. Led by Yuan Sui, Geeling Chau (PhDs at Caltech), and Professor Yisong Yue, the team is tackling the "Hidden Expertise Problem" by building a system that learns directly from scientist interactions to analyze high-dimensional time series data.
By integrating with EverMemOS, the team has developed a "Memory Flywheel" that transforms expert intuition into a scalable, persistent asset. This ability to institutionalize domain knowledge creates a formidable GTM moat, moving beyond simple automation toward deep, specialized intelligence. We also want to congratulate the Beta University founders, Rachid Hakmi and Marouane LAMHARZI ALAOUI, for securing second place. Beta Fund remains committed to backing the next generation of high-signal technical builders who are defining the future of AI memory infrastructure.
Last week at Beta University, we hosted a high-stakes panel featuring Ryan Green (Principal at Antler), Adam Cai (Founder at Numix), and Omeed Tabiei (Optimist Legal) to deconstruct the structural traps killing AI startups in 2026. The discussion moved past the AI hype to focus on the "hard math" of survival: investors have pivoted from "potential" to the Burn Multiple (Burn vs. New ARR). In a compute-heavy world where R&D is a capital black hole, a pitch deck might get you a meeting, but only a repeatable GTM motion gets you the wire.
The panel emphasized that founders don’t lose their companies through equity dilution, but through restrictive board seats. The consensus was clear: avoid surrendering board control at Pre-Seed and stick to Observer status at most for Seed rounds to prevent lead investors from vetoing critical GTM pivots. Furthermore, we addressed the dangerous valuation disconnect: while fundraising is driven by narrative, exits are driven by EBITDA multiples. Understanding the mechanics of an acquisition before the first raise is the only way to avoid building a high-priced cage for yourself. Thank you to everyone who joined the conversation as we continue to back high-signal builders.
