Teachers who have mastered the Star, the Square and/or the Triangle don’t use lesson plans because they don’t want to use them because they don’t need them and would rather spend more time with their loved ones than just in the summer. What is their curriculum? It’s the language itself, not parts of it. In the words of Susan Gross, just “talk to kids”. Wise!

Students whose

curriculum is the language don’t need a lesson plan. They have a solid, failsafe curriculum right in front of them in the form of their teacher and on the wall in the form of the Star (Square, Triangle) chart. When the kids don’t hear the language in meaningful and interesting and varied contexts, they just learn lonely words that they forget and the beat of no results goes on.

Because of the charts, the kids know where they are in class at any moment and often, when asked, esp. with visitors present, can walk over to the Star poster, point to where the class is on its particular language voyage for that day and explain to everyone where we are in class, what we are doing, why we are doing it and how it supports the Standard.

Some kids can even explain the research to any visitors, which gives me a grin that can last all day. There are those few kids who get into the research. So cool! Positivity is the water in which we now swim in class. Our kids know that they can build a One Word Image or a tableau vivant or a story out of one word because they do it every day.
