After my trip to the desert southwest last November, the travel bug bit me. Hard. I knew that this is what I wanted to be doing for the next few years: exploring new areas, taking in more of the wonders of our planet, and sharing them in turn. In thinking of other places I’d like to visit, the redwoods of Northern California and beaches of the Oregon Coast immediately came to mind.
Then I thought of Adrian Klein. I had the pleasure of working with Adrian at the Out of Olympic Conference a few years ago. He’s a great guy, a member of the highly respected Photo Cascadia group, and this is basically his backyard, just like the Coast of Maine is mine.
I asked him if he would like to do a workshop swap. I’d show a group of his followers the wonders of the Maine Coast, and he could bring me and my group along to explore the beauty of the Oregon Coast and Northern California’s redwood forests. He enthusiastically agreed.
June 1-5, 2027, join Adrian and me on one of the most visually stunning stretches of the Pacific Coast. We start immersed in the presence of Northern California’s iconic redwood forests, where towering ancient trees, fern-filled understories, and rugged coastal views provide endless photographic inspiration.
Conditions in this region often bring atmospheric fog and blooming rhododendrons in early June, both of which we hope to experience during this workshop. Regardless of what the weather delivers, the redwood ecosystem offers an incredible range of photographic opportunities and a chance to experience the quiet power of these remarkable old growth forests.
As the workshop progresses northward, we transition to the dramatic shoreline of the Southern Oregon Coast. Here our focus shifts from forest to ocean as we photograph everything from sweeping seascapes to intimate coastal details while exploring the shoreline through changing tides.
From the well known sea stacks of Bandon Beach to less visited stretches of coastline that are equally photogenic, participants will have the opportunity to work with a wide variety of coastal scenes and conditions. We’ll include multiple outings with very low tides, allowing us to explore areas that are typically underwater.
One thing I’m particularly excited about: Chances to visit lighthouses!
Together these locations create a diverse photographic journey through ancient forests and dynamic ocean landscapes along the Pacific Northwest coast.
I hope you can join us!
