We’re 2 weeks into the school holidays here. I can’t quite believe it.
If it applies to you, I hope you are enjoying the school holidays — or at least surviving them — which, quite honestly, was my primary goal when our boys were small. 🥴
Holidays are still a sensory onslaught but definitely easier now they’re aged 7-11. Without a big trip planned this holidays we’ve been enjoying doing a bit of this… a bit of that…
Amongst the play dates and highlights (below), there’s been a fair chunk of downtime and probably too much screen time for both the kids and I.
Adam and I attended the Farm Owners Academy Deep Dive in Melbourne and enjoyed some rather rare A&B time thanks to Ad’s Mum who held down the fort and closed out term 2 with the boys. We caught the train down and back which is still a novel idea for us!
Celebrated my birthday with dinner at Farmer’s Daughters Restaurant and seeing Hadestown at Her Majesty’s Theatre. Both incredible. I’ve seen my fair share of musicals and Hadestown is something else! While in Melbourne I also dined with some friends at Robata Japanese Grill — highlight meal of the trip!
While in Melbs I had some fresh new professional photos taken by the vibrant and talented Fi Mims. I’ve included one below. Fi is awesome - highly recommend her!
Our budding chef Myles and I did a parent-child Vietnamese cooking class at Otao Kitchen Cooking School in Melbourne (for the second weekend) while Ad took the others to the museum. This was a fun and different experience to do together.
We visited Lightscape at the Royal Botanic Gardens with some friends. Super cool. I loved it. Kids didn’t love it as much as I wanted them to 😂 but I think that’s because it had been a big day already and 2 of our boys were sensitive to the lights and noise, exacerbated by tiredness. I was disappointed in myself that I hadn’t taken their sensory sensitivities into greater consideration but I suppose you don’t know unless you try these things?
Seen, The Film
This week I watched a virtual screening of Seen. I’ve been trying to get my hands on it for a while, because, as you might guess, it’s right up my alley. 🤓
It’s a feature-length documentary that not only explores the transformative power of personal healing for parents but also delves into the scientifically supported effects of such healing on parenting and its impact on child brain development.
Through heartfelt interviews with experts, real parents, and thought leaders like Maggie Dent, the film reveals how childhood wounds, societal pressures, and unspoken struggles shape the way we show up for our children.
It invites us to reflect, heal, and reimagine parenting not as perfection, but as a journey of self-awareness and healthier connection with ourselves and our children.
Have you seen it? My gosh it’s powerful. I had some gut-punch, heart-hurting moments. I think every parent should watch it.
Without spoiling anything, here are a few lines that stayed with me:
Children are our biggest teachers.
We are hardwired for connection.
No one is the cause of my feelings. They are happening within me.
Trauma is what doesn’t happen, as well as what does, and what we make that mean.
Nothing can hurt you more than your own unguarded thoughts.
You cannot use logic to escape the programming of your childhood.
Reparenting yourself is giving yourself the love and support you didn’t get as a child.
Tell your children: “I love you. I’m here. You matter.”
Being a parent is a really hard, important job.
The healing work is between you and you.
You can find the film here along with details on where to watch, free resources, and a follow-up parenting course if you want to go deeper.
It was such a potent reminder that the inner work I’ve committed to over the last seven years, and now support others through, really matters. It ripples out across generations.
“Your children have come to trigger you to heal.” - Maggie Dent
