The end (of the list, not so much the world) is in sight, and with this special week’s arrival also come five all-time favorites, including two from Handel’s masterpiece:
#15 - Glory to God - Messiah (City of Dunedin Choir): Short, sweet and memorable, the first of back-to-back selections that proclaim heaven’s song of “Peace on earth.”
#14 - I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day (Casting Crowns): The Civil War origin story locks in this version with a triumphant “God is not dead, nor does He sleep!”
#13 - Gesu Bambino (Jessye Norman): The pinnacle of Italian carols, warm childhood memories are buoyed by the dramatic, lilting voice of the late diva.
#12 - And the Glory of the Lord - Messiah (Brussels Choral Society & Ensemble): Something about the oratorio’s first chorus, from Isaiah 40, awakens the soul.
#11 - O Little Town of Bethlehem (The Living Stones Quartet): A capable a cappella take on the 19th-century American carol that calls us away from the season’s bustle.
