Ben DeGrow · A Hopeful Diversion

Believe it or not, I didn’t originally craft the list to bring out the tender thread that works its way through nearly all of today’s musical entries:

#30 - What Sweeter Music (Trinity College Choir): “…can we bring than a carol for to sing the birth of this our Heavenly King.” Just pause, take it in, and appreciate Rutter.

#29 - Sweet Little Jesus Boy (Charles Wesley Evans): The king of the Christmas-themed old Negro spirituals, sung by a voice rich and pure.

#28 - Mary’s Little Boy Child (Harry Belafonte): Go further south to the Caribbean for this tender, lighthearted tribute to the same infant Savior.

#27 - Still, Still, Still (Cantus): For whatever reason, the inability to understand all the German lyrics takes a back seat to the captivating aesthetics of this Austrian carol.

#26 - For Unto Us a Child is Born - Messiah (Tenebrae, London Symphony): Selections from Handel’s oratorio will come fast and furious now. Isaiah 9:6 into the veins.

For those who want to see the full Countdown, check it out on YouTube or Spotify. Come back tomorrow for five more selections…
