The Gordie Howe International Bridge opens to traffic on July 27. Six lanes, 1.5 miles, connecting Windsor, Ontario to Detroit, Michigan. It’s named for the Red Wings legend, which is fitting for a border crossing that just spent five months getting checked into the boards by the United States government for no reason anyone can point to.
The bridge replaces the private, century-old Ambassador Bridge as the main commercial artery over the Detroit River, a corridor that moves roughly $70 billion in trade and four million trucks a year. Construction started in 2018 under a 2012 agreement between Canada and Michigan.
