Doug Veliky · Beer Crunchers

Low-alcohol beers came out firing in early 2026 and, despite many questions still needing answers, the offensive has only accelerated. Those questions include: Is “mid-strength” the right name for them? Where should these beers live on the shelf? What’s most important to consumers: lower alcohol, fewer calories, flavor, occasion, or the lifestyle the branding conveys? The answers will shake out in time, but breweries are no longer waiting around to find out.

New entrants range from first-time founders utilizing the country’s growing contract brewing network to some of the most established names in craft beer. Some are extending flagship brands. Others are creating entirely new ones. Some emphasize calories and moderation. Others barely mention them at all. The diversity is what makes this trend a fascinating follow.

Rather than looking at these seven new entrants as individual beer launches, we’ll use them to explore the different bets that insurgents and incumbents are placing on the future of low-alcohol beer. Along the way, we’ll examine what these brands are prioritizing, where they’re diverging, and which approaches could have the greatest odds of success as this emerging segment continues to take shape.
