Ruth · Becoming Me

There is a moment we inhabit more regularly than we’d like in life.

A precipice we teeter on between past and future.

An uncomfortable present full of painful reminders and nameless what ifs.

A place in which the world around us and within us alters in unimaginable ways.

It is often a point in time in which we are forced to be frozen within.

A needed pause between what was and what will be.

There are infinite and endless possibilities held within the uncertainty of change.

Corridors crammed full of open doors behind one

single

closed one.

The universe’s invitation to keep eyes wide open and look ahead,

But every fibre of being focused on what’s behind - what was - what will never be again.

Invisible threads of memories and comfort keep us attached to something that no longer exists.

And yet, there is part of us that wants to stay trapped in the between-ness

Because the unknown chasm of future potential is terrifying

And we are frozen

Here.

There is such potential hidden through the inhospitable fog of the unknown,

Our mind fills the darkness with monstrous outcomes and avoidable conclusions (if we just stayed here, where it is safe)

The imagination creates dangers within the strange and unrecognisable terrain,

Fear stops us from taking a step towards something we cannot see.

When we are inevitably thrown into the unchartered map of our next chapter

We wonder why we were so convinced by the allure of the uninhabitable between-place,

But safety comes in so many forms,

And sometimes we are comforted by that which we know,

Even if it is painful.

Sometimes,

Remaining feels better than not knowing what might be next.

What makes someone fall, arms outstretched, into the unknown chasm, or run blindly into the darkness of the future stretched out before them?

What makes someone able to see beyond the distorted mirrors reflecting past and warping future?

How nice it would be to dance through the uncertainty,

Light on our feet,

Heart and eyes open.

How marvelous it would be to meet change with excitement,

Embracing the limitless nature of our own being

Set free

From what was,

Not yet trapped by what is to come.

Cherishing the next breath

In which all possibilities are held safely within.
