Aminah Ojere · Becoming Her

Today I’m grieving the old me.
The version that people pleased.
The version they could control.
The version that allowed things to stay the same.

No one talks about how quiet it gets when you finally set boundaries.
When you finally choose you.

Your phone gets quiet.
The favors stop coming.
People stop showing up the way they used to.

At first, it feels like a loss.
But then you realize,
That quiet isn’t loneliness.
It’s peace.
And peace feels weird when you’ve lived in chaos.

Still, the question lingers:
Am I really happy? Did I make the right decision?

Because peace comes with guilt.

Survivor’s guilt isn’t just for extreme situations.
It shows up when you take the blindfold off.
When you finally see.
When you decide to choose something different.

And the guilt whispers
“Who do you think you are?”
“Was it better to stay the same?”

They don’t tell you the hardest part is trying to show others a new way. A new you.
Because most people don’t want new.
They want what’s familiar.

So they’ll say you’ve changed.
They’ll say you think you’re better.
They’ll get quiet.

The people who say you’ve changed were counting on you to stay the same.

They weren’t mad you grew.
They were mad that they couldn’t keep you small.

I’m learning it’s ok to be on a different frequency.
It’s okay if they don’t understand your vision.
Because it wasn’t given to them.

That’s why you can’t take advice from people who’ve never lived the life you want.
They don’t have the map.
They might have an idea,
But an idea isn’t proof.

Your dream is yours. For a reason.

So yes, it’s okay to grieve the old you.
She kept you safe.
She kept you liked.
She was the “good girl.”
The one who stayed small so she could fit.

But it’s also okay to let her go.
To move forward.
To choose the version of you that doesn’t shrink.

The version that shines.
The version that thrives.
The version that doesn’t apologize for wanting more.

We were never meant to stay small.
We were never meant to just survive.

We were meant to grow.
To expand.
To choose ourselves.
To own our gifts.
To design a life that’s ours.
To create with freedom instead of fear.

The old you can’t walk you into your next chapter.
But the new you can.
And she’s ready.

If this letter resonated, it’s likely because you’re in the in between.

Not who you were.
Not fully who you’re becoming.
And no longer willing to stay small just to be understood.

Inside the paid tier, I share 1–2 deeper essays each month for people navigating identity shifts, boundaries, self-trust, and what it actually looks like to keep choosing yourself when the old versions are no longer available.
