Dean Potter was one of the most extraordinary athletes who ever lived. He was also, by his own account, in near constant agony.
A new HBO documentary traces the life of this record-breaking climber, slackliner, and wingsuit flier who died in 2015 attempting a flight through a narrow ridge notch at over 100 miles per hour.
What strikes me as an emotions therapist is not the risk. It is what the risk was for.
Dean wasn’t chasing adrenaline. He was chasing relief. From Depression, from self-doubt and shame, from the relentless weight of an inner world he couldn’t seem to quiet any other way. The wingsuit gave him what meditation couldn’t, instantaneous, total escape from himself.
I know that territory. And I know what happens when the escape stops working.
I wrote about this more fully here, if you want to go deeper.
Make the most of this – YOUR life
And if any of this is landing for you, I want you to know there’s another doorway, one that doesn't require a wingsuit. My next Elevation Ceremony is coming up soon, a free, live online gathering where we go directly into whatever is knocking loudest on your head, so you can begin to meet it, move it, and stop running from it."
