Throwing It Back to July 9, 1956

This Thursday I’m throwing it back exactly 70 years - to July 9, 1956 when Hometown Hero Tom Brewer, of the Boston Red Sox, was on the cover of SI’s All-Star Game Preview. Brewer, who would end the season with a career-best record of 19-9, earned the only All-Star Game nod of his career in 1956. It’s always a thrill to see Brewer among Mantle, Musial, Snider and other baseball greats on the cover. I was fortunate to have my own copy of that issue autographed by Tom in 2009 when the Cheraw High School baseball field was named in his honor.
