Greetings!
I just wrapped a very busy week of volunteering at our parish’s VBS (vacation bible school). It was totally chaotic and also totally wonderful.
I had said yes to volunteering to teach the fourth graders months and months ago, basically right after we joined this new church and I was looking to gain some community and dive in.
As the date came closer though, I started getting cold feet. I didn’t know what I was doing! I haven’t worked with summer campers since I was in college! Who did I even think I was. I’m an introvert for crying out loud and the idea of singing and dancing makes me almost break out in hives. There clearly was a much better person than me to teach this lively group of catholic fourth graders. I actually almost emailed the director to back out, or at least ask her for a more humble position (maybe the kitchen? I could clearly set out juice boxes and popcorn bags!). Finally, the morning arrived. My toddler refused childcare so she stayed attached at my hip the entire week. Now, our VBS is a pretty hardcore program. The kids attend daily mass, go to confession, attend adoration and have actual real class at desks - in addition to games, singing and dancing.
