Hello again Science fans!

I’ve been overseas for a while. Thanks to David for swapping dates with me last month. While I was able to keep up with calendar updates while I was away, finding time to reliably write the newsletter wasn’t going to be easy. But I’m back now, and over my jet lag (I think).

This weekend marks the unofficial start of summer here in the US. We tend to mark summer as running from Memorial Day to Labor Day. This year that means the longest possible summer period, as Memorial Day is as early as it can be, and Labor Day is as late as it can be. In many parts of the world, the unofficial start of summer is May 1. But it sure wasn’t summer-like in Germany for my last week, what with morning temperatures of 35, highs barely reaching 50, and rain. It is quite summery there now though.

Of course, astronomical summer starts on the summer solstice, June 21 this year, and ends September 22 with the autumnal equinox. Any season is a state of mind, so take your pick and celebrate as you see fit.

A couple of scheduling items, before we get into the science news:

  • The last Ask a Science Envoy talk by Wonderfest for 2026 will occur this Wednesday, May 27. There has been some confusion on the date, so if you were planning on attending on Tuesday, know that the event is actually scheduled for Wednesday. The Wonderfest website may not have been updated to reflect this change yet, but our calendar has and I’ve verified that Wednesday is the correct day.

  • The Tech Interactive in San Jose will be holding STEM Summer Camp sessions for children grades 2 - 6. This type of daily course doesn’t fit into our calendar structure well, so we don’t list them there, but instead mention them here. The camps are broken into weekly sessions, separated by ages. If you have children in this grade range and are looking for something for them to do this summer that’s both fun and educational, take a look at their listings for these camps.

Climate and the Environment

I wish I could say things are looking up on this topic, but the UN has just issued a warning that Earth’s climate is further out of balance than at any time in recorded history. 2025 was not quite as hot as 2024 due to the La Niña weather pattern in effect these past months. That is over, and models point to a “super” El Niño later this year, perhaps as strong as the biggest one since we started keeping records in the 1870s.

This should exacerbate the water shortage issues in the West this summer. The lack of snow pack in the mountains this spring has had a dire impact on waterflow in the Colorado River, setting up unprecedented shortages in areas that rely on the Colorado for fresh water supply.

Still, the Administration continues to ignore the science and weaken or eliminate decades of conservation progress, defunding non-fossil fuel energy programs and supporting reductions in air quality regulations.

Space

The Psyche mission which is going to, well, the asteroid Psyche, just passed by Mars where it got a gravity boost and course adjustment. It also tested out some of its instruments, taking pictures of the Martian surface during a rather close approach. NASA released the image above, detailing wind-blown impact craters in the Syrtis Major region. For scale, each pixel represents nearly 1,200 feet. The large craters near the center-bottom average about 30 miles in diameter. Here’s more about the Psyche mission.

We already know that Mars spins slightly faster each year, but up until now we didn’t know why. Scientists in the Netherlands think they know, and it involves a potentially active volcanic region on the surface..

NASA released 12,000 more pictures from Artemis II’s trip to the moon, taken by the onboard crew. Here are some of the most inspiring ones.

We only confirmed the existance of exoplanets (planets orbiting alien stars) in the early 1990s. We now have confirmed nearly 6,300 such exoplanets. And the T16 project, which uses existing data from the TESS (Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite) project and a new technique to look for exoplanets just announced 10,091 new candidate exoplanets. You can read Phil Plait’s thoughts on this here. Not to be outdone, the new Rubin observatory has found 11,000 new asteroids! And it is still in testing phase! It also imaged abound 80,000 previously known asteroids.

Health

Half of US adults under the age of 50 get wellness advice from social media influencers. Just how qualified are these people to be dispensing advice? Fewer than one in five are conventional medical professionals. Some base their advice on a sample of one…their own experiences, and have thousands of followers.

Have you heard of the interstitium? It is a third bodily system, circulating fluids within the human body, after the well-known cardiovascular and lymphatic systems. Researchers are just beginning to understand this system, but the implications are enormous. This NY Times article uses clever animation to illustrate these systems. The interstitium links Eastern and Western medicine ideas. It was discovered because of tattoos!

Between the Administrations release of information about UFOs, and the new film Disclosure Day from Steven Spielberg, expect interest from the media and public about UFOs to increase. Our friend Andrew Fraknoi, Bay Area Astronomer and educator, has put together a list of resources that skeptics have found regarding UFO cases and claims. Click here to download this list. Among other things, Andrew is the lead author of the most-frequently-used introductory astronomy textbook in the US.

But it turns out human chemists haven’t always had this ability with creating molecules. Enter “Click Chemistry”! At the turn of the 21st century, Professor K. Barry Sharpless and his collaborators turned conventional chemistry synthesis upside down by designing a system that treats molecules as Legos - just as nature does. Since then, Click Chemistry has been used to build new materials, map living cells in real time, and revolutionize drugs for cancer treatment. And this clever, fast, and useful framework for creating the molecules humans need to improve our lives only continues to show more promise for the future.

AI and the Developing Child: Myths, Evidence, and Open Questions - Livestream - 05/26/2026 12:00 PM

Using iron meteorites to trace the earliest protoplanetary disk chemistry - 05/26/2026 12:00 PM

The chemical and thermal conditions of the earliest protoplanetary disk set the stage for everything that followed - from the compositions of the first planetesimals to the volatile budgets of rocky planets. Iron meteorites, as the remnant cores of the first generation of differentiated planetesimals, preserve a direct record of these earliest conditions and the processes that shaped them. In this talk, I will present results from a series of studies using the elemental and isotopic compositions of iron meteorites to reconstruct three interconnected aspects of earliest disk chemistry: the thermal structure of the inner disk and its role in establishing the volatile and moderately volatile element compositions of the first planetesimals; the collisional and dynamical histories of these bodies and how they were disrupted and reassembled in the earliest solar system; and the processes that controlled the distribution of nitrogen, carbon, and water across the disk. Together, these results reveal that the chemical diversity we observe among rocky bodies today was largely inherited from the conditions and processes of the earliest disk, within the first few million years of solar system history.

Anyons are quasiparticles that obey exchange statistics distinct from those of fermions and bosons. Such particles can emerge in fractional quantum Hall (FQH) systems, providing a platform for exploring exotic topological phases of matter. In this talk, I will present our group’s recent efforts to investigate anyons in bilayer graphene-based van der Waals heterostructures. I will first briefly review the fractional quantum Hall phase space in bilayer graphene, which hosts a remarkably rich landscape of topological orders, including candidate non-Abelian states. I will then give an overview of the interferometry experiments in our group, at both odd- and even-denominator filling factors, designed to probe the exchange statistics of Abelian and non-Abelian quasiparticles.

On April 5th, 2026, members of the ACS SF Bay chapter gathered in Monterey for a whale watch led by marine biologist and Monterey Bay Whale Watch owner, Nancy Black. What a wondrous four hours we had - treated to cetaceans not commonly seen in the numbers we witnessed. For many of us, the encounter with the Northern Right Whale Dolphins was a first and we were dazzled observing their sleek dorsal-finless bodies and witnessing their ‘playful’ behavior. Please join us as photographer-extraordinaire Jodi Frediani shares photos from that day and anthropologist Andrew Loyd Smith discusses his research examining human - cetacean interactions during whale-watching excursions with a focus on Monterey Bay. He will discuss his work that explores how encounters with pelagic dolphin species - especially northern right whale dolphins and Pacific white-sided dolphins - elicit distinctive responses of awe, but even framed in terms such as “weird.”

Antarctic macroalgal forests: species interactions and impacts of changing ice - 05/27/2026 11:00 AM

Don’t let anyone tell you that there are no forests in Antarctica. There are forests of large brown macroalgae (seaweeds), with a rich understory of red macroalgae, along the northern third of the western Antarctic Peninsula (WAP). The vast majority of the macroalgae are chemically defended from herbivores, but are in a mutualistic relationship with huge densities of associated small crustaceans. The crustaceans benefit because the chemically defended algae provide a refuge from predators, and the crustaceans benefit the macroalgae by keeping them clean of fouling microalgae.

Macroalgal forests decrease in the central WAP because of increased annual sea ice, which reduces light availability. However, sea ice has been decreasing dramatically over the past decade. We predict that the central WAP communities are changing accordingly, and have shown that even sites that already had high macroalgal cover have experienced major increases in macroalgal biomass over only a few years.

Strategic stability exists when neither side thinks it can improve its strategic outcome by striking first. Today, strategic stability is increasingly important and potentially fragile. Nuclear weapons are no longer the only technology that threatens a state with devastation. AI competition and emergent AI capabilities could challenge strategic stability in many ways, including offensive and defensive cyber operations, sensing, ballistic missile defense, and intelligence / counterintelligence operations. This talk will provide a detailed account of how AI, nuclear deterrence, and semiconductor interdependence jointly shape strategic stability in U.S. - China competition. From there, the seminar will make the case that AI introduces both new deterrence tools and new threats to strategic stability, especially through its effects on cyber operations, intelligence, and command-and-control.

Interplanetary dust particles (IDPs) are small particles ranging from nanometers to centimeters that are present throughout the solar system. IDPs are produced by several processes such as cometary outgassing, asteroidal collisions, and grain-grain mutual collisions. As IDPs orbit the Sun, they impact all planetary bodies and contribute to several important processes, including contamination of planetary atmospheres with metallic atoms, erosion and weathering of planetary surfaces, and chemical modification of the solar wind. IDPs are also a natural hazard to all robotic and human spacecraft and/or landed assets (e.g., on the lunar surface).

In this talk, I describe the fundamentals of the distribution of IDPs in the solar system (also known as the “zodiacal cloud”) and touch on both remote-sensing and in-situ observations. I also compare models and constraints on our solar system’s zodiacal cloud to those observed around other stars - so called “exozodiacal clouds”. This comparison helps to place our solar system in context with other star systems and in doing so, may point to evidence of our solar system’s particularly violent youth.

AI data centers are projected to consume hundreds of terawatt-hours annually by 2035, demanding power conversion technologies that are not only energy-efficient but also cost-effective, scalable, and reliable. It is estimated that the global market for power supplies, distribution, and management systems serving AI data centers and cloud computing is expected to reach approximately $145 - 150 billion. Conventional line-frequency transformers and multi-stage AC-DC architectures suffer from low efficiency, bulkiness, high cost, low reliability, and limited dynamic response. To support the rapid growth of AI workloads and comply with emerging energy and environmental standards, innovative power electronics solutions are urgently needed. This presentation explores the development of a novel megawatt-scale, medium-voltage (MV) power conversion system based on a Variable Air Gap Solid-State Transformer architecture. The approach aims to reduce energy loss, footprint, and cost while enabling flexible, modular deployment, and achieving more reliable operation in large-scale AI data centers.

Inside the Next Big Bay Area Earthquake - 05/28/2026 07:00 PM

The Hayward Fault runs through the East Bay - including Oakland and Berkeley - and is capable of producing a major magnitude 7 earthquake. Its last big event was in 1868, leaving scientists with limited data on what the next one might look like.

In this lecture, Artie Rodgers, seismologist at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, explores how supercomputer simulations are used to model future earthquakes on the Hayward Fault. These models help predict how the ground could shake - and what that means for the Bay Area.

Rodgers will break down what scientists know, what remains uncertain, and how research is helping us better prepare for the next big one.

Join us for this beautiful hike! A POST volunteer will share a few words about POST’s decades of conservation success before the hiking group explores a strenuous but mostly shaded 5.4 mile hike with ~900 feet of elevation gain.

In one of the county’s best preserved, second-growth coastal redwood forests, we’ll also pass extensive areas of Douglas fir and oak woodland, as well as a few remaining old-growth redwoods. The proximity to the San Andreas fault results in a unique geology and landscape, while there are many remnants of a rich cultural history of the region. The park is also home to a wide variety of mammals, birds and reptiles, some of which might be spotted along the trails.

Learn about fascinating geologic evidence contained in the rocks underneath Mt. Sutro of ancient island arcs, lost marine basins, oceanic trenches and subduction along the Pacific Ocean Ring of Fire and the important role played by radiolarian fossils contained in chert beds. All part of the interesting story of California’s assembly from microcontinents and island arcs rafting across the Pacific Basin over the last 400 million years.

Solar flares drive space weather which can affect satellites, astronauts, and life on Earth. Having a better understanding of what drives solar flares can lead to better space weather prediction. In this talk, I will discuss the GRIPS (Gamma-Ray Imager/Polarimeter for Solar flares) high altitude balloon mission and its applications for studying particle acceleration in flares. Join me to explore the world of low-cost access to space, solar flare science, and the implications of space weather!

Particle colliders have been the workhorse tool for particle physics since they were invented over 60 years ago. Forward particles are those that are produced at colliders and then travel in a direction close to the beamline. For decades, forward particles were largely ignored, and all of the large detectors currently operating at colliders are blind to them. In the last few years, however, our understanding of the forward region has been transformed and we now know that this region contains a treasure trove of physics, including the most energetic neutrinos ever produced by humans, possible evidence for dark matter, milli-charged particles, and new forces, and a wealth of other valuable information. To capture some of this potential, the Forward Search Experiment (FASER) has been operating in the forward region of the Large Hadron Collider since 2022. FASER’s latest results will be described, along with lessons learned and their implications for the future of particle physics.
