Life outside the kitchen, but also in it
The photoshoot for my cookbook wrapped this week after ten days of shooting. One of the coolest things I’ve ever done, without question, but I’m ready to crawl into a hole for a straight week. For ten straight days, we cooked ten meals a day and photographed each of them, in addition to using the evenings for lifestyle photography. Not only were we cooking, but we used the time as an opportunity to re-test everything I’d written.
I tell everyone I’m normally a “one-activity-a-day” kind of guy, so this was a change of pace. I still got my mid-day siesta though, that’s a non-negotiable.
The cookbook is slated for release in early 2027, which feels far away, but I’ve learned that books take years. From concept, to drafts, to recipe testing, to photos, editing, and promotion… it’s a long road.
But now that the shoot’s done, I’m beyond stoked for what’s next. Seeing the book come to life on camera was really special to me. I just submitted my manuscript, so now the editing begins.
My (shockingly photogenic) photographer Quentin and I celebrated the project over dinner at Comedor in Austin. Highly recommend if you’ve never been.
Reading: My cookbook manuscript, over and over again
Listening: Lewis Del Mar
Watching: My favorite pastime is talking trash about bad TV. My wife is deep in the grips of bad reality television, and I’ve held out on falling into that trap. However, I did recently start watching Age of Attraction on Netflix with her and I’m hooked. Will I publicly recommend it to you? No. Will I finish the series? Yes.
Doing: It feels weird to celebrate your birthday as a grown man, but I did it anyway. I invited a group of my friends to Antonelli’s for a guided cheese tasting. They walked us through seven different cheeses, each with their own pairing. The chocolate orange chèvre was a unanimous hit, and I still don’t really like bleu cheese. If you’re ever in Austin, give this place your business. They are wonderful, and so knowledgeable.
