The Two Slowest Planets in the Sky Are About to Hand Us Something Rare

Ayana Madrone 🌻 · ROOT & RITUAL

There’s a longing you’ve been carrying. Maybe for months, maybe for years. The sense that your life is meant to look different than it does, that there’s a truer version of you waiting somewhere just past the edge of what you’ve built so far. You don’t talk about it much. It surfaces in the shower, on long drives, in the minute before sleep. And then you fold it back up and go on with your day, because wanting something you can’t name feels foolish, and changing your life feels impossible.

You’re not making it up. And you’re not being ungrateful, whatever that voice says. Something real is moving under your life right now, and this week the sky says so out loud.

Maybe it shows up as restlessness, a low current under everything, even the good days. Maybe it shows up as envy, that sting when someone else does the brave thing, because some part of you recognizes it as the thing you haven’t done yet. Maybe it just shows up as tired. Not the tired that sleep fixes. The tired of holding a life in place that stopped fitting a while ago.

This Saturday, the sky has something to say about that longing.

In the early hours of July 25, two planets that almost never speak to each other will slide into a rare, harmonious angle. Neptune, the planet of dreams and spirit. Pluto, the planet of endings and rebirth. They’re the slowest movers in our whole sky. Neptune takes 165 years to circle the sun, Pluto takes 248, so when they finally form a connection, it isn’t a mood or a moment. It’s the beginning of an era. And this one, the astrologers will tell you, keeps deepening for the next six years.

But forget the mechanics for a minute. Here’s what it means for a life. Yours, specifically.

ROOT & RITUAL is where we read the sky and tend the life underneath it. Subscribe and walk these doors with us.

Every one of us carries both of these planets inside.

Neptune is your dreamer. The part of you that senses there’s more to this life than what you can see and touch, that keeps imagining a gentler, truer life even when the practical mind calls it naive. Your dreamer has been talking to you your whole life. She’s the source of that longing you keep folding up and putting away.

Pluto is your gravedigger, and I mean that with love. The part of you that knows some things have to end. The job that’s been slowly killing you. The relationship that ran out of truth years ago. The version of yourself you built to survive a life you’re no longer living. Your gravedigger isn’t cruel. She’s the most honest thing in you. But her truths are the ones we least want to hear, so most of us spend years pretending we can’t hear her.

Here’s the thing about these two: they usually work alone, and that’s why change so often fails. The dreamer dreams without the courage to bury anything, so the new life stays a fantasy. Or the gravedigger buries without a dream to grow in the cleared ground, so the ending just feels like loss. You’ve lived both versions. We all have.

But when they finally sit down together, the conversation goes like this.

The dreamer says: picture it. The whole life. Don’t flinch.

The gravedigger says: now look down at your hands, love. You can’t carry that and everything you’re already holding.

The dreamer says: so?

The gravedigger says: so choose what you put down.

What happens Saturday, and what keeps unfolding for years after, is that these two finally start working together. The dream gets a shovel. The ending gets a purpose. The sky is holding a door open between the life you’ve been longing for and the letting-go it would actually take to walk toward it.

But I want to be honest with you about what kind of door this is, because it matters. Some transits shove you. This one won’t. This is a gentle aspect, an offering, the kind of energy that changes nothing at all unless you reach for it. The sky opens the door. Walking through it is still, and always, yours to do.

So under everything this week, one simple instruction. Clear a space. Let the new thing find you. That’s it. That’s the whole assignment, and the rest of this letter is just me showing you why it works and how to do it.

I heard a story once that I’ve never been able to put down, and it belongs to this exact sky.

A woman had reached a place in her life where nothing was moving. Not falling apart, exactly. Just stagnant. The same days repeating, the same heaviness in the same rooms, the sense that her life had stopped breathing somewhere along the way and she couldn’t say when. She’d tried the usual things. New plans, new intentions, new promises to herself that this season would be different. Nothing took. It was like the new things had nowhere to land.

So one day, without quite knowing why, she opened her closet and started pulling things out.

Everything she hadn’t worn in a year came off the hangers. The dress bought for a version of herself that never arrived. The clothes from a body she kept waiting to have again. The gifts kept out of guilt, the maybes kept out of fear. She held each thing and asked one question: does this still resonate? Does this still bring life? And if the answer was no, it went in the bag. What remained, when she was done, was a closet that held only what was true about her now. Not who she’d been. Not who she was supposed to become. Now.

And then, because something had started moving in her that she didn’t want to stop, she did the same with the rest. The drawers. The shelves. The boxes she’d been carrying from home to home without ever opening. Room by room, she released what no longer resonated, and kept only what was alive.

She wasn’t just tidying. She was signaling. Every bag that left her house was a message to the universe, and to her own deep self, which may be the same thing: I am done holding the past in place. There is room here now. You can send the new thing.

And here’s the part of the story that matters most, the part that’s true whether or not you believe the universe listens. When we grasp desperately at what no longer serves us, we end up stagnant, and not because the universe is punishing us. It’s simpler than that. There’s no room for anything new to find us. Our hands are full. Our shelves are full. Our days are full of managing the clutter of a former life, and all the energy that could be spent living gets spent maintaining. The new life keeps circling, looking for somewhere to land, and finding every surface covered.

Her life started moving again not when she figured out what she wanted, but when she cleared the space for it to arrive.

That’s Pluto’s work making room for Neptune’s gift. The gravedigger clearing the ground so the dreamer’s seed has somewhere to grow. It’s the whole teaching of this Saturday’s sky, sitting in an ordinary closet.

All of us are living under this sky, but a few of you will feel this one in your bones.

Aries, and anyone with Aries rising. Neptune is traveling through your sign, slowly dissolving an old self-image that no longer fits. You’ve maybe felt foggy about who you even are lately. Saturday connects that fog to real transformative power. You’re not lost. You’re molting, and the old skin comes away easier this week than it has in a long time.

Aquarius, and Aquarius rising. Pluto is in your sign for years to come, rebuilding you from the foundations up, and this weekend the rebuilding gets handed a vision. If your life has felt like a demolition site lately, this is the moment the blueprints arrive. Whatever you find yourself longing for right now, that longing is the plan.

Leo, and Leo rising. The Sun just entered your sign, and the whole sky is lit up around you this week. For you this lands in your relationships, in the people who mirror you. Someone close to you is showing you your own power, maybe uncomfortably. There’s growth available through the connection, if the bracing against it can ease.

Gemini, and Gemini rising. Your mind is electric right now, and this weekend the ideas that come to you may be more than ideas. Some of them are instructions, the kind worth having a notebook by the bed for.

And everyone else. Taurus, Cancer, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Pisces: this one reaches you as a rising tide rather than a wave crashing on your particular shore. But tides lift every boat. If a dream surfaces this week, waking or sleeping, if an old longing gets suddenly loud, that’s yours, and it’s real, even though the astrology headlines aren’t shouting your sign.

Below is the full ritual for this weekend’s sky, a complete practice for clearing room and calling in the new. Rituals like this land in paid subscribers’ inboxes with every major transit. If this space feeds you, consider joining us.

Because this is a gentle aspect, the sky won’t do this for you, and because both planets are moving retrograde right now, turned inward, this first pass is more inward and private than the ones still to come. A root moment, not a launch moment. So if this door is calling to you, here’s a full practice for meeting it, drawn straight from the woman and her closet. It can happen any time between now and Sunday night, all at once or spread across the weekend.
