ROOT & RITUAL · ROOT & RITUAL

You know the grip I mean. The one in your hands, the one that’s been there so long you’ve stopped noticing it costs you anything to hold on this tight.

We’re crossing into Leo season this week, and the crows can feel the shift before the calendar catches up. The light gets bolder. The air asks something braver of you. And right on cue, Mercury finally stops circling backward and starts moving forward again, untangling whatever’s been snarled in your words and your plans since it turned retrograde. This is a week for opening the hand, clearing the fog, and letting the fire that’s been waiting finally catch.

The spread this week tells a story of hoarding, drifting, and a spark still waiting for its match. Three cards: the Four of Pentacles, the Seven of Cups, and the Ace of Wands reversed. A closed fist, a haze of maybes, and a fire that hasn’t been given permission yet.

Picture a crow perched over four coins, wings clamped down over the pile, feathers puffed out twice their size, refusing to preen, refusing to hunt, refusing to do anything that might mean letting one coin roll an inch out of reach. Other birds pass overhead, calling to each other, circling toward the horizon. She doesn’t look up. She can’t afford to.

That’s the Four of Pentacles, and it’s naming something you already know about yourself this week. You’ve been gripping. Money, maybe, or a plan, or an old identity you’ve outgrown but won’t quite release, or a version of safety that’s actually just exhaustion wearing safety’s coat. The grip always makes a kind of sense from the inside. It always feels, in the moment, like the only responsible thing to do. But notice what it’s cost you. The crow isn’t wrong to want security. Every creature wants that. But a crow that never opens its wings never eats anything new, never finds a better branch, never flies anywhere the old pile of coins couldn’t already take it. Security bought at the price of your own movement isn’t security. It’s a cage you built yourself and locked from the inside.

Notice what your hands ache from holding. The moon reaches her first quarter on Tuesday, the exact kind of sky that asks you to act instead of stockpile, to spend a little of what you’ve been sitting on in service of something that’s actually alive. This week, loosen one finger. You don’t have to let go of everything, and nobody’s asking you to be reckless. Just enough to remember your hand can still open. Just enough to feel what it’s like to hold something loosely, the way you’d hold a bird you actually wanted to keep coming back.

And once the grip loosens, the crow looks up and finds the sky full of things that all look like exactly what it wants.

The Seven of Cups is the haze of maybes: cup after cup after cup, each one glittering with a different version of your life, a different job, a different love, a different self you could become if only you chose correctly. There’s a cup that looks like money. A cup that looks like escape. A cup that looks so much like the life you actually want that you can’t tell, just by looking, whether it’s real or only a very convincing reflection of light on water. This is the card of too many doors and not enough clarity about which one actually opens onto something true. It isn’t a punishment, and it doesn’t mean you’re lost. It’s just what happens when a mind that’s been clenched shut for a long time is suddenly handed room to dream again. Of course it dreams in every direction at once. That’s what a mind starved of possibility does the moment you finally feed it some.

But Mercury turns direct on Thursday, and with it comes exactly what this fog has been missing: the ability to see clearly enough to choose. Not to chase every cup, and not to talk yourself out of wanting anything at all, but to actually look, closely, at what’s in front of you, the way you’d look at something in good light instead of guessing at its shape in the dark. You don’t need to chase every cup this week. You need to sit still long enough to notice which one is actually warm to the touch, and which ones only look that way from a distance.

And here is the spark, waiting, exactly where you left it.

Upright, the Ace of Wands is pure ignition: a single new idea, hot and sudden, demanding to be chased before it cools. Reversed, this week, it isn’t gone, and it isn’t dead. It’s banked, the way a fire is banked overnight, still alive under the ash, still warm at the center, just waiting for someone to uncover it and give it air. Something in you has a real creative fire in it right now, a project, a desire, a bold new direction you haven’t said out loud yet, and it has been sitting unlit because the hand was too busy gripping the coins and the eyes were too busy chasing the cups to strike the match. That’s not failure. A fire that’s banked isn’t a fire that’s failed. It’s a fire that’s waiting for the right conditions, and this week, the conditions are arriving whether you feel ready or not.

This is the card that ties the whole week together. The Sun crosses into Leo on Wednesday, the boldest, most creatively alive placement the sky offers all year, ruled by fire, ruled by the desire to be fully and unapologetically seen, and it is handing you exactly the fuel the Ace has been holding in reserve. But a fire needs somewhere clear to burn. It needs a hand that isn’t clenched around something else, and a mind that isn’t scattered across seven different cups. You had to open your hand first. You had to see through the haze first. Now, with both of those finally loosening, the spark gets its chance, and Leo season is exactly the kind of wind that turns an ember back into a flame.

The cards have shown you the fire. Below is the practice that lights it.

The arc of July 20th–26th moves from grip, through fog, into fire: releasing what you’ve been hoarding out of fear, clearing your sight enough to choose one true thing among many, and finally striking the match on the creative spark that’s been waiting its turn. This ritual is built to move that arc through your body, timed to Leo season’s opening and Mercury’s return to direct motion.
