I’ve wanted to sit with Timothy Snyder for a long time as I’ve been an admirer of his writings, particularly his book ON TYRANNY. When we finally connected last Friday, it happened to be one of those mornings when news is breaking before you even get a cup of coffee or make your juice. Damn! What now? Journalists Don Lemon and Georgia Fort were arrested for doing their jobs. Alarming, to say the very least. Chilling foreshadows, at worst.
Tim and I discussed what these ongoing constitutional violations that we are seeing really mean to the larger picture. We also talked about something I’ve been thinking about a lot lately - the battleground of language. Plus, we discussed the passion of protest and how silence is something that power counts on. So, we cannot be silent.
We all know that this is bigger than one arrest or one news cycle. History is clear. Rights don’t vanish overnight. They erode when people stop demanding them. That’s why things like Don and Georgia’s arrest cannot pass by without notice. We can’t allow it. We must press forward. And speak up. And act up.
Hope the exchange with Tim gives you some things to discuss, think about and maybe act on.
