In summer 2022 I was given the best assignment I have ever been given in my life. I was tasked to watch 3 episodes of the beloved cult 00’s soap opera, Passions. I was given this assignment in order to prepare to be a guest on the Passions Podcast. For the first time in my life, I actually enjoyed doing homework. Aside from unlocking core memories of being 13 and watching the Teresa, Ethan, and Gwen love triangle. The best part of re-watching Passions was learning how many of my friends and connections watched the show back in the day too! It was funny learning a new side of the people in my life, and how we both enjoyed the antics of Timmy and Tabitha, the couple goals of Sheridan and Luis, the fashion of Teresa, and the chronic eyeroll behavior of Ethan.
When the day came to be a guest on the podcast, I was 100% prepared. LeTara, the host, was such a delight to speak with, and her energy exuberated through the zoom. As an author it is always fun discussing storylines and character development. Clearly the writers of Passions truly went wild with those! That’s why Love and Mardi Gras is a rom com. Sometimes it’s fun to break the rules and let the characters lead with their own complexities. People enjoy getting lost in a world that makes our own seem a little easier to be in. It was a very good day.
