Hello dear readers! Now that my hat garden is sprouted and well on its way to becoming a hat, I’ve got it in my mind to start a new project: making oak gall ink. I’ve been reading about the Book of Durrow and the Lindisfarne Gospels. Knowing that they were written with oak gall ink makes me want to try my hand at the process. I have, however, run into a small problem with this project.
Despite the large number of oaks in our area, I haven’t found one gall! When I lived in California, I saw galls all the time. Now that I’m in Kentucky, the oak species are a bit different. Maybe I need to brush up on my oak identification skills to maximize my chances of finding oak galls.
Halloween is next week! Have you chosen your costume yet? If not, here’s some ideas from 1924, 1936 and 1950.
This wasn’t made specifically for Halloween, but if I were more daring, I might try to make and wear Marian Martin’s devil costume from the 1943 movie Lady of Burlesque. It tickles me that a naughty character is being explicitly naughty.
