For Memorial Day:
This is an introductory discussion on Pericles’s funeral oration in Thucydides’s “Peloponnesian War.”
In it, I discuss how and why the text itself should be understood as absolutely crucial —even central— to any education in the so-called “Great Books.” Along the way, I discuss its enormous significance for the problem with our academics today.
Note: It is from a session with a client for whom I am teaching him Thucydides at his request to better understand how to read the “Great Books”
