Every year in the first week of July, a portal of cosmic energy opens up between the fixed star Sirius and our solar system. During this period of time, our Earth is showered with a blast of divine grace, love, light, and inspiration.
This sacred event is called the Opening of the Sirius Gateway (or the Opening of the Sirius Star Portal). It occurs when the Sun conjoins the fixed star Sirius around July 3-7.
Sirius, the Brightest Star: Steeped in Myth and Revered by Ancient Civilizations
Sirius is also known as Alpha Canis Majoris. It is a binary star in the constellation of Canis Major, the Greater Dog. Sirius is colloquially known as the “Dog Star.” Sirius is one of the closest stars to Earth and is visible from most locations on the Earth. Therefore, it has been revered by ancient civilizations and has appeared in many indigenous creation myths throughout the world.
Sirius occupies 20 degrees and 12 minutes of sidereal Gemini. This part of the zodiac lies near the beginning area of the Vedic nakshatra of Punarvasu, which means “The Return of the Light.” In a fascinating correlation, Sirius is the brightest star (or “light”) in the sky. The name Sirius is derived from the Greek Seirios, which means “glowing or scorching.”
Throughout history, Sirius has been used to mark calendar events. According to the late fixed-star astrologer Diana Rosenberg, the current Kali Yuga of the Hindu Calendar is said to have begun with the death of Krishna, on Feb 18, 3102 BCE at the zero hour. At this exact moment, Sirius was setting on the western horizon. As another example, the Sothic Calendar of ancient Egypt was based on the heliacal rising of Sirius which marked the annual flooding of the Nile.
Sirius in Occultism and Astrology: A Major Vortex of Power, Creativity, Abundance, and Wisdom
In addition to being used in ancient calendars, Sirius is a prominent star in occultism and astrology. According to all the ancient mystery schools, Sirius is our Sun’s astral companion, the Sun behind our Sun (parent to our solar system), and the true source of Divine Light in the local area of our galaxy.
The Theosophists taught that Sirius is a major vortex of occult power and wisdom and the source of the mysteries of initiation for our planet. Astrologer M. Temple Richmond described Sirius as “a vast cosmic heart center aligned with universal and cosmic principles such as karma and periodicity…and a point of emanation for cosmic and other avatars.” In astrology, when Sirius aligns with key positions in a horoscope, it represents abundance, wisdom, passion, creativity, and leadership.
The Opening of the Sirius Gateway: July 3-7
As mentioned, the opening of the Sirius Gateway is related to the astronomical alignment of Sirius with the Sun and Earth. This alignment occurs when the Sun conjoins Sirius at around 20 degrees of sidereal Gemini on July 6. However, the conjunction of the Sun and Sirius falls within an effective orb of influence beginning around July 3 and through July 7.
The annual Sun-Sirius alignment occurs near aphelion. This is a word derived from the Greek “apo” meaning apart or away from, and “helios,” the god of the Sun. Aphelion occurs when the Earth is farthest from the Sun, about 94.5 million miles.
On the other hand, perihelion, when the Earth is closest to the Sun, occurs annually on New Year’s Eve and in the early days of January. At this time, Sirius is directly overhead near midnight, crowning us from its highest position in the southern sky.
This year, aphelion will occur on July 6 at 1:30 PM EDT. When the Earth is at aphelion, it moves slower in its orbit around the Sun than at any other time of the year. It is an important time for all of us to slow down and take some time to rest and recharge, too!
During this special alignment, the central force of life within our solar system will receive a regenerating boost, and the hierarchy of great Divine Ones who guide humanity’s evolution will shower our planet with grace and blessings. The high frequency light stream coming through at this time can awaken inspiration, intuition, compassion, and a broader perspective. This is a powerful time to reconnect with our highest spiritual potential and release limitations.
Ultimately, Sirius represents the principle of freedom as a significant element of the Divine Plan for humanity. This is clearly an important contemplation because the Sirius Star Portal will be open on Independence Day in the United States.
Sirius and the Dog Days of Summer: Forty Days of Sweltering Heat
Although the opening of the Sirius Gateway is a positive event, it does signal the beginning of the sweltering Dog Days of Summer in the northern hemisphere. This period, which begins with the exact conjunction of the Sun with Sirius, will last for around 40 days until the second week of August in most mid-latitude areas. At that time, Sirius will move out of the Sun’s bright rays and reappear in the east before sunrise. This is known as the heliacal rising of Sirius, its first appearance in the morning sky before sunrise after a period of invisibility.
The Dog Days are the time of greatest heat and humidity. Some ancient sources associated them with a highly inflamed and lethargic public mood. In the Clavis Calendria, the Dog Days are described as a time wherein “the sea boiled, the wine turned sour, dogs grew mad, and all other creatures became languid; causing to man, among other diseases, burning fevers, hysterics, and phrensies [frenzies].”
Ancient Greek and Roman astrologers connected the Dog Days with heat, storms, mad dogs, weariness, fever, and bad luck. Superstition and hyperbole aside, this season is definitely a good time to practice patience, slow down, and go to the pool or beach (if possible) to cool off!
