Saturn is making some big moves as it prepares to retrograde on July 27. This planetary shift can create a new direction in your personal or professional life. Although Saturn is commonly regarded as a demanding planet, its retrograde period can present opportunities as well as challenges. In this special article, I will provide a in-depth analysis of this planetary cycle. For my paid subscribers, I’ll also explain how this transit could impact each sign.

Understanding Saturn Retrograde

Saturn will begin its annual retrograde cycle on July 27 at 3:57 PM EDT (7:57 PM UTC). Saturn will remain retrograde until December 11, which will be around 137 days (about 20 weeks or four-and-a-half months). Saturn will station retrograde at 21 degrees of Pisces in Revati nakshatra. It will station direct at 14 degrees of Pisces in Uttara Bhadrapada nakshatra.

Saturn has been transiting in Pisces since late March 2025. In Pisces, Saturn is said to be cleaning up a lot of karmic odds and ends. Additionally, this transit is all about creating healthy boundaries, confronting hidden fears, and redefining our ideals and ultimate spiritual orientation.

Saturn symbolizes the focus, discipline, and determination we need to face problems and reorganize our lives in order to make improvements. Thus, as Saturn retrogrades, this is an especially important time to review our recent past experiences as well as to reconsider, modify, and refine our goals, choices, and commitments.

The current Saturn transit may be most significant in natal or mundane horoscopes with planets and important chart points occupying (or in aspect to) the area of the zodiac spanning from 14-21 degrees of Pisces (in the second drekkana). Note that Saturn, the planet of transformation and manifestation, is making contact with this area several times over the course of a year due to its retrograde cycle. This suggests a powerful period for review, reassessment, and potential new developments. In some cases, there may be reversals of fortune, or chronic health issues may flare.

Saturn is the lord of Vayu, the wind or air element. Vayu governs movement as well as prana, the life force energy which innervates the respiratory, circulatory, and nervous systems. As a result of Saturn slowing down and shifting direction, we might expect some mood shifts, anxiety, and shocks or surprises around its stationary periods. There can also be intense geopolitical, seismic, or meteorological events or concerns with water supplies. Any of these may occur in the ten days before, the day of, and the ten days after Saturn’s station. The second drekkana of Pisces where Saturn is transiting will specifically emphasize issues related to integrity, relationships, and financial matters.

One of my favorite images of Saturn is the Hermit, the ninth Major Arcana card in the Tarot. He is depicted as the contemplative elder sage standing atop a solitary mountain peak, shielded from the outer world by his hooded cape, bearing the light of truth, holding the staff of wisdom, and focused inward.

The Hermit even more accurately portrays Saturn in retrograde motion. This marks a natural cycle in which to pause and create a sanctuary of solitude for introspection and re-connection in order to fortify our foundations.
