We are about to experience a very special lunar event this Wednesday!

The Full Moon will occur in Capricorn and in Shravana nakshatra on July 29 at 10:36 AM EDT (2:36 PM UTC).

In the Abenaki native tradition in North America, this lunation is known as the Thunder Moon because of the high frequency of thunderstorms that occur during the peak summer season. The Thunder Moon embodies not only raw power, but also divine authority, a cleansing force, and omens of change.

In this article, I’ll talk about why this Full Moon is so special. I’ll also explain how you can make the most of this unique lunar energy.

The Full Moon will occur in the sidereal sign of Capricorn. This is a mysterious and magical sign that exemplifies the manifestation of Spirit in matter.

Since the sign of Capricorn is focused on reaching goals, the lunation occurring here marks an important time to pause and enjoy your achievements. This Full Moon is also a wonderful time for meditation, healing, ceremony, and prayer. This is because it will occur in the Moon’s own Shravana nakshatra, which is also associated with healing, deep inner listening, spiritual practice, and social engagement.

This Full Moon will also be very potent because it will occur in conjunction with Pluto, the planet of intense power and rebirth. Pluto-Full Moon conjunctions have previously been associated with significant seismic shifts or dangerous storms occurring on the day of the Full Moon or a day or two on either side.

In addition, this special Moon will be in a full opposition aspect with Jupiter and the Sun. Jupiter is strong and auspicious not only because it will be in exaltation in Cancer, but also because it will closely conjoin the Sun in a state known as “cazimi.” The latter occurs when a planet lies within 17 longitudinal minutes of the Sun, which makes it extraordinarily powerful. All of these aspects will amplify good fortune, optimism, and wisdom.

This Full Moon will also be very special because it marks the Vedic festival of Guru Purnima. This is when the whole world can become more receptive to divine grace and celestial boons. The Sanskrit term “guru” broadly means teacher, but more specifically refers to one who sheds light and removes ignorance. “Purnima” is the term for Full Moon, so Guru Purnima is the Full Moon of the Guru, or the Full Moon that dispels darkness.

Guru Purnima honors Veda Vyāsa, the legendary rishi and author of the Vedas, the Mahabharata, and the Puranas, some of the most important works within the Vedic tradition. This special event commemorates Veda Vyāsa’s birth and the day when he organized and divided the Vedas into four parts. Lord Ganesha is also honored on this day because he is the true embodiment of wisdom and was also Veda Vyāsa’s scribe.

On Guru Purnima, it is customary to show appreciation to our preceptors, those who help to illuminate our path, dispel the darkness within, and guide us toward spiritual liberation. This is a wonderful occasion for spiritual contemplation and celebration. It is also considered a favorable day on which to begin a new spiritual, educational, or healing practice. Devotees traditionally make sacred offerings of food to the needy (annadanam), or sponsor pujas (or yagyas) which include charitable giving.

To make the most of this special Full Moon, you can follow these steps:

  • Honor Your Mentors and Teachers: Take time to thank the people who have guided you (mentors, teachers, advisors, etc.). Send a message, write a note, or share something you learned from them.

  • Practice Deep Listening: Set aside quiet time for reflection. Meditate, sit in silence, or focus on your thoughts and priorities without distractions.

  • Start Something New: Use today as a good day to begin a fresh habit, course, routine, or project—especially one related to learning, personal growth, or well-being.

  • Make Offerings/Give Back: Do something helpful for others, such as donating, feeding those in need, or supporting a cause.

  • Reflect and Reset: Spend time in personal reflection or a simple group activity to let go of what no longer serves you and set clean intentions for the future.

  • Stay Grounded: Keep your balance amid a busy or intense day. Drink plenty of water, rest when needed, and combine any inner-focused work with practical self-care.

This Guru Purnima Full Moon offers a profound opportunity to receive grace, dispel ignorance, and step forward with renewed wisdom and optimism. May it bring healing, clarity, and blessings to all!

Please note that this and all my other forecasts are based on the sidereal zodiac used in both Vedic and Western sidereal astrology, not the tropical system used by most Western and a small number of Vedic astrologers. All the astrological charts that I work with and share are calculated according to the sidereal zodiac and Lahiri Ayanamsa.
