Welcome to the first edition of Afterglow, a monthly roundup of the SubStack posts and music that have resonated most with me this month.

June has been an eclectic month of sound, with some stand out discoveries. EX_PHENOMENA by The Surrealist is one of the most interesting albums I’ve heard so far this year, it sounds like something truly new. There’s something exciting about discovering an artist just as they’re hitting a creative peak.

I got stuck in a doom loop with Foxwarren’s latest release 2 for a solid week, it literally became the soundtrack to my life. Such a great concept with so many hooks. They just made the stems for the album available so that you can make your own remixes.

It’a also been another month of thought provoking perspectives on Substack. I’m genuinely glad that I found this platform, it feels like some of the best writers are emerging here. I’ve been following This Week in Sound for some time now so it was great to get a fresh post this week with another dose of audio curiosities from across humanity.

I wanted to have a little fun with the graphics for Afterglow and try something outside my usual aesthetic. Admittedly my personal work has been a little dark and menacing lately so playing with some softer tones and more gentle type styles is a nice change.

I found a fascinating resource for public domain graphics called public.work – if you have an interest in visual design I think you’ll find this site to be a rabbit hole of aesthetic discovery.

– Scott
