Your metabolism is in charge of where calories get used. And when you cut calories too aggressively, your body adjusts:
It slows down heat production.
It dials back digestion.
It even conserves energy in your brain (which is one of the most expensive organs to fuel).
So you think you’re burning more than you’re eating, but your body has already adapted.
The net change is zero.
And now, your metabolism is operating at a lower level than before.
That’s why so many people gain the weight back as soon as they start eating normally again. They’ve downregulated their metabolism and have to re-regulate just to get back to where they started.
The secret isn’t to eat less. It’s to change your maintenance level—your metabolic set point.
Because your metabolism isn’t a fixed system. It’s responsive.
And it’s responding to the signals you send all day long.
If the signals are:
low food
poor sleep
high stress
inconsistent routines
constant high-intensity training
…your body adapts by becoming more efficient.
Which sounds good. But it isn’t.
Efficiency, in this context, means you’re burning fewer calories in order to save energy. This leads to feeling tired, cold, and hungry.
So how do you raise your metabolic set point?
You send the opposite signals.
Here are the 5 that matter most:
1. Adequate food
Your body cannot turn the dial up if it doesn’t trust that energy is coming in.
2. Strength training
Muscle is metabolically expensive tissue.
It costs a lot just to keep there. This is how muscle can ramp up your metabolism.
3. Less stress load
For the high performers I work with, this is often the real bottleneck.
Work stress + poor sleep + under-eating + hard training is not “discipline.”
It’s a chronic stress signal.
And a stressed system will hold onto body fat.
4. Sleep and recovery
Sleep is where appetite regulation, blood sugar stability, and stress tolerance improve.
This is non-negotiable.
5. Daily movement that doesn’t spike stress
This is one of the highest ROI ways to increase metabolic output without pushing your body into a defensive state.
Try to move more — walking, pacing, fidgeting, gardening, etc.
When those 5 signals change, the body’s response changes.
Energy improves
Hunger normalises
Fat loss becomes predictable
