It’s unethical to review children’s books from my perspective as an adult - which is why I always ran our books through the Little Earthquakes for their reflections as actual kids.
Now that the Little Earthquakes have grown into Medium-Biggish Rascals, we’ve handed the torch to younger kids to screen kids books for engagement, validation, and a solid gut-check.
Welcome Isabela, our resident youth book reviewer, who shares her #OwnVoices reflections on picture books through her perspective as a young Jewish trans girl who loves soccer and kitty cats.
Our kids were the first generation in our family to learn that they had a right to set boundaries around their bodies.
So those first ten years were basically an experiment - could I actually raise two masc-presenting kiddos to respect other people’s bodies, despite what every other adult, movie, and youtube video was teaching them?
It’s with a great deal of relief that I can now report, (14 years in!) that my teens have embodied setting and protecting boundaries around who touches them.
While still a work in progress, I’m also glad to see they respect the boundaries of those around them - including those who are smaller, younger, and more hesitant to voice boundaries. It brings me great joy to see other kids feel safe around my kiddos in ways I never felt as a kid near older boys and men.
So these were the books we used. I hope you have as much fun practicing stop/go tickle parties and shouting “GET OUT OF MY BODY BUBBLE!” as we did.
