So…wow. This has been one of the most eye-opening books I have read in a long time. Andrea Pitzer chronicles the evolution of concentration camps beginning in Cuba in the late 19th century up to Guantanamo Bay in the 21st. In between, she shows how each iteration of the camp was “improved” upon in each new context, adapted by fascist, Communist, and democratic governments alike. She also weaves the common features of all of them that provide a thru-line over the last century and a quarter.
I don’t think you can truly understand the five-alarm fire taking place right now with ICE and immigrant detention facilities without this historical and global context — I hope you will join this important discussion with Andrea Pitzer.
