Around here, it’s easy to joke that winter starts next week, but really, spring is almost over. It happens so fast - a little blink in between winter and summer where there is mad, insane green growth as ALL the PLANTS have to catch up from 6 months of hibernation. Earlier this week I was out collecting rocks for a path I’m making in my yard & found this cool dandelion path in the fields:
Here’s my feet while I was making these pretty dandelion photos - I also accidentally ended up wading through a sinking mass of manure-y sludge. Yuck. Also, the work-in-progress wildflower path in my yard, which had an accelerated timeline this spring because a drunk driver tore up our yard. At least he didn’t run his truck into the house. Meh.
Stuff that’s happening:
Van Buren, Maine is continuing with their arts-based city economic development project and I’m teaching a free, in-person acrylic painting workshop that is designed for beginners but anyone is welcome. All supplies are paid for! There is a limit of 12 students and to register you just need to call the town office. The dates are June 10th - July 15th from 10-11:30 am. I’ll be leaning into mixing in some impromptu group storytelling to generate ideas and also be sourcing ideas from somatic and art therapeutic ways of creative doing. I will be teaching technique, so yes, you will learn how to work with paint and brushes on a variety of surfaces including paper and canvas. The town office phone number is (207) 868-2886.
In September I’ll be teaching a project intensive photography workshop that will be online through the Los Angeles Center of Photography. The title is “The Human Impacted Landscape”, here’s a link to more info and registration:

Other things:
I am just finished up a free pilot of a MITx course on Arts Entrepreneurship that was interesting and I’d recommend if you want to get business ideas that include a lot of step-by-step instructions for your art practice. It’s not currently open for enrollment but they said they’re planning on doing it again.
If you’re in the Bar Harbor area this summer, check out Artemis Gallery in Northeast Harbor. They have four of my horizon prints on the wall upstairs and it’s a fun/scenic part of the Maine coast with lots of little fishing coves and twisty roads and hiking trails. That’s not the only cool thing to do in the Bar Harbor area - there’s a new Andy Goldsworthy sculpture at the College of the Atlantic, which I’m looking forward to checking out this weekend. IF you are in or visiting Van Buren this saturday, my friend Leah is working on the final stages of a series of murals and she has one time slot left where the public can drop by and help paint!
Here’s some info on that: Come for a little or a lot--whatever works for your energy and time! So far we’ve been able to have options for big/less precise painting AND finer detail/motor skills painting. We should be able to find everybody something they can do managably!
