This summer I cut ten inches off my hair. Not because I hated it. Not because my hair wasn’t healthy. In fact, all of my friends told me they loved my long hair and that I HAD to keep it! But I had a nagging feeling it was time for a fresh start — literally and figuratively.
In nature, reinvention is the most natural thing in the world. Trees shed their leaves. Snakes shed their skin. The moon cycles through phases, only to return full again. Nothing clings to an old form out of pride or fear. Nature understands that shedding is part of both growth and survival.
But for us humans, the idea of starting over can feel… paralyzing. We’ve been trained to cling. To stay in the job, the city, the relationship, the identity, even after it’s long stopped serving us well. We’ve been taught that quitting is failure, that changing your mind is inconsistency, that starting over means you weren’t doing the right thing in the first place.
But this couldn’t be more wrong.
