Confidence hacks do not work.
What even is a confidence ‘hack’ anyway?
Looking at yourself in the mirror, saying:
“You’re the man, dude, you are 100% the man.”
Self-help ‘gurus’ suggest standing in a power pose, in front of your mirror, screaming affirmations until your next-door neighbour can hear.
Alternatively, right before a moment, you are required to be confident that you can beat your chest like in that scene from The Wolf of Wall Street:
Yeah…
Don’t do that.
These forms of confidence are incredibly fragile and will crack at the first sign of uncertainty.
Confidence is intrinsic, something within.
Charismatic people are often described as confident, but how do they get it?
There are 2 ways that actually work:
I’ve already done it - Confidence
Effort will lead to results - Confidence
The better we become at something, the more confident we become.
For example, think back to your first day of work.
You will be lacking a little confidence:
You don’t know how to do things yet
You do not know your colleagues
You do not know their systems
What happens after 6 months?
Do you still feel the same way?
NO
In fact, you walk in on Monday mornings like you own the damn place.
Any skill or hobby you start, you lack confidence because you are not good at it yet
Once you get better, you have intrinsic confidence in your ability
To become more confident, you need to practise.
I hate to be that guy but perhaps Megan Markle was on to something
The reason why including ‘yet’ in your vocabulary is that it acknowledges your current level, while also implying you will get there with effort.
I haven’t learnt how to do that skill, yet
I haven’t won a competition at that level, yet
I don’t know how to solve this issue, yet
You do not have to be confident in the moment
But be confident that you WILL get there.
This tiny word shows you that you may not have the success now, but you will get there.
When I ask people ‘What is Charisma?’ they often link charisma and confidence together.
They share the same attributes as charismatic people are seen as confident, and confident people are seen as charismatic.
You can become charismatic
You can become confident
In our sessions, we practise the skills of charisma in a safe environment so you can build confidence.
