A simple and playful creative practice can do so much for all of us, regardless of age or ability. Creative play is regulating, anxiety-reducing, generative, and connective. It improves our mood and helps us find common ground. Just like taking a walk, it’s hard to feel more grouchy after a mere 10 minutes of doodling and laughing together at the kitchen table, on the bus, or on the floor in the classroom.
While these creative games are extra simple and available to you even if you only have a pen and a notepad, they actually are offering a critically important experience—opportunities to think flexibly, to come up with new ideas, to problem solve, and to make decisions. We may think of these skills abstractly and conceptually, but really they are muscles to be trained, and these games are a light and joyful way to do so.
