Happy-less is a black-and-white beauty story that runs inside Vogue Portugal’s March 2025 “Pursuit of Happiness” issue, and it reads the brief against itself. Instead of visualising happiness, Alberto Maggio and Maria Sofia Brini build a portrait gallery of happiness’s artefacts: the smile, the smoothed surface, the rehearsed pose and make each one quietly unstable. Yuyan Xiao is photographed in thirteen configurations across the story. The copy on the opening spread, in Portuguese, positions the editorial as an inquiry into whether happiness is real or only exhibition, the line between the concrete emotion and its image.
