A Health Update on Armistead

On Christmas Eve, Armistead took a tumble down the stairs — an unfortunate moment involving a plate of food and a glass of iced tea that got away from him. He fell most of the way down a full flight. I heard the fall from my office upstairs, and it was incredibly frightening, but he was very lucky. He ended up with just a couple of broken ribs and a shoulder injury, but it could have been much worse.

He came home that night and we still managed to have a lovely Christmas at a friend’s house. Yesterday, though, when he slipped onto the floor and we couldn’t get him back up, it became clear that he needed to return to the hospital. The injuries have made it hard for him to do much of anything, so he’s there now getting some physical therapy on his shoulder (as well as better pain meds) to help him function once he’s back home.

The good news: his spirits are good, his mind is sharp, and he’s mostly just very sore and bruised. We’re hopeful he’ll be coming home tomorrow.

Because of all this, we won’t be shooting any new Dispatches for the next week or so while he focuses on healing and getting back on his feet. Armistead sends his love and can’t wait to be back connecting with you all very soon.
