On Sunday night, I received a WhatsApp message from a strange blonde woman who came up in my phone as ‘Kia Bhutan’. The message was addressed to my full name and said:
We kindly ask you to review your reservation at [hotel] on [dates].
Some required information is still missing. Please complete the form below to avoid any interruption to your booking.

Your cooperation ensures a smooth check-in and a pleasant stay.
We appreciate your time and look forward to welcoming you.

Reservations Team
I am quite good at spotting scams. I didn’t see why a genuine message would be sent via WhatsApp when the only communication I’d had from the hotel was via my email address.
I also didn’t know why the message would come from a woman’s name instead of the hotel’s name — or why, given that she’d sent it from her name, she wouldn’t have signed off with that instead of ‘Reservations Team’.
“And it’s a UK number, not a Spanish one,” I pointed out to Adam.
“You could have booked it through a British company?” he suggested.
But I hadn’t: I’d booked direct with the Spanish hotel.
