Jennifer Esposito · A Rebellious Life with Jen Esposito

If you're anything like me, or just even halfway alive with a heart, then you may be finding it hard to do, well, anything.

The whole idea of this page, A Rebellious Life, like I've said many times, is not to burn it all down, even though burning it all down seems like the best solution at this juncture. But since we cannot do that, A Rebellious Life is actually about finding the joy anyway, finding the way anyway, finding your voice in a world that deliberately, relentlessly, boldly, and with zero apology tells you to keep quiet. Because that's what works for the masses—that's what sells you the creams, the dreams, and all the lies in between.

And we buy them because we're in a maze that has no ending.

In the last couple of weeks, I've found myself having many conversations with my dear co-host Cat Yezbak from Rebellious Podcast: Art, Culture, Human where we talk about culture and how it dictates you as an artist—and how it dictates to you who to be as a human.

Even as I'm writing this, I feel like sobbing. Actually, most days, most hours, I'm on the brink of a complete panic attack and complete mental breakdown from the atrocities that we're witnessing on a—not even daily—but an hourly basis. And then we're all functioning through it. Yes, barely, but we're functioning through it. I believe it's a slow form of abuse, mental torture, and a complete attack on our fucking rights as free human beings—the way we were intended to be.

I, for one, have been having a really tough time these past couple of days. Even if you choose not to look at it, as I've said in other posts, it's seeping in. The blatant disregard for life. I don't even have to say more. The blatant disregard for humans. And you can put your head in the sand, but it's still seeping in through the dirt.

So, what do we do?

As I say all the time in my classes, through A Rebel Collective, my school, and on my pod—and here—turn it into art.

But do you feel frozen? Too frozen to even form sentences?

Well, that's the conversation I had with Cat. She felt frozen and I get it. So did I. Then I said a sentence that struck me as it came out of my mouth. I said: Write, right from here. And I'm going to say it to you all:

Write, right from here.
Create from here.
Sing from here.
Dance from here.
Live from here.

With all the pain, all the rage, all the sadness, all the fear.

We simply must be a witness to this time. Through art and through joy.

So, I am offering this new space, STILL HERE SUNDAYS I want us to be accountable to one another in our big and small wins right now. It could be finishing a script. It could be finishing a poem. It could be finishing a song. It could be starting a new book. It could be going for a long walk when you are feeling broken. That YES, I'm going to enjoy the sun today. My family today.
I'm going to simply enjoy the trees today.

Because I promise you: all the best stuff is free.

I took time for myself at the beach this weekend. Alone. And just sat there. Just me with the sea. No one was there except for a mom and her daughter. She played with the waves endlessly. The simply joy she was having brought me back to life somehow. That the joy that still exists and is priceless. SHE, Mother Nature, she will be here time after time to help you gain some perspective. Even long after we’ve destroyed ourselves and one another.

So, I welcome you to come find joy even in this insanity—not only for you, but for so many who cannot. Also for a world that we believe in and want to see, rather than sinking into the world they're trying to create.

STILL HERE SUNDAYS —a new weekly community share to keep us accountable, one baby step at a time.

All are welcome to read along. However, paid subscribers will be able to add what they are working on: a script, a drawing, a home project, starting a new routine, or barely managing to do, but doing it anyway. Drop it in the chat Each Sunday I’ll be sending you a message and a check in.

This space is to take some joy from your small rebellions, tiny progress and new beginnings. We will be accountable to one another—not with pressure or performance, but with the presence of what we are all currently existing through.

I’ll start- I’m currently writing two different scripts while also working on set, dealing with some health stuff, always trying to get some exercise, enough water and rest, plus many other things. All while bearing the crushing weight that is our current culture. Where empathy is a bad thing and the villains keep winning. Some days I can calm my brain and focus enough to write scenes. Other days I write seven sentences and sometimes, not a word.
Here- IT ALL COUNTS!!

So if you're a paid subscriber, we'll meet in the chat every Sunday to reflect, witness, and keep going! JOIN ME IN THE CHAT STILL HERE SUNDAYS
