I. The Abyss

The dark was not empty.

Alex and John held each other's hands, but the dark was between them — not between, but inside. The quipu's cords, which had bound them in the dust world, no longer pulled from without but from within. Invisible threads that reached to the bone.

The voice returned. Not a whisper anymore — a call. Alex's name. Only his.

"John —"

Alex's grip tightened. Then loosened.

"John, something's pulling."

The quipu's cords moved — not in his palm, but in his chest. Where he'd first felt John's skin in the dust world. Where he'd first existed. That place pulsed now, and the pulse was not his own.

Supay's voice didn't come in words. It came in images. Alex saw himself — not here, not now, but somewhere else. A dark chamber where the walls weren't stone but memories. And the memories were his — but not the ones he remembered. Deeper. Older. The quipu's memories. The cords' memories. Everyone's who had ever held it.

"No," Alex said. "I'm not the one."

But the cords didn't ask. They pulled.

John felt Alex's hand slip from his. Not violently — like someone falling asleep, and the dream taking them. Alex's eyes were open, but he wasn't seeing him. Something else. Somewhere else.

"Alex!"

But Alex was already moving. Not with his legs — his body was there, but the inner cords pulled, and the body followed, like a puppet whose strings are worked by an invisible hand. The dark swallowed him. One step. Two. Then silence.

John stood with the quipu in his hand. The cords were slack. As if the quipu had exhausted itself too. As if its work was done.

But John knew — it wasn't done. It had only begun.

II. The Descent

John didn't move.

Not right away. He stood in the dark, the quipu in his hand, and waited. Not because he hoped Alex would come back. But because he knew — if he moved now, and not in the right direction, he would lose him. Not just Alex. But that part of himself that was bound to Alex.

The quipu's cords shifted. They didn't pull — they pointed. Slowly, gently, like a finger indicating the way in the dark.

John moved.

The pyramid from within was different from without. The walls were not stone — but time. As if each step carried him into a layer where the air was thicker, the dark deeper. The reliefs on the walls changed — the unknown creatures vanished, and something else came: faces. Human faces. Thousands. Hundreds of thousands. Each different, each in pain.

"They held it too," John said to the whisper only he could hear. "The quipu. They held it too."

And each face faded. Each one let go. Because the quipu holds no one. It only points. And whoever doesn't follow — is lost.

John followed.

The corridor narrowed. The walls closed in. John had to lower his head — like at the small door. The door of humility. But now it wasn't a door, but the stone itself, forcing him to bow.

And then — the quipu stopped. The cords pointed no further. They pointed down.

John looked down. In the floor, an opening. Not large. Just big enough for a person to fit through. And from the opening came not dark, but light. Faint, golden, warm — like the half-dark in which John's chest had been golden, and Alex had licked the tip of him.

The dust world's light.

John understood. Alex wasn't in the pyramid. Alex was in the dust world. Supay hadn't taken him — he'd returned him. To where the quipu's cords had first bound them. Where love had first been both chain and escape.

But that was before. Before the abyss.

III. The Fall

The interior of the pyramid was not a corridor. Not stairs. Not a chamber.

An abyss.

John stopped. The dark they had been following broke off — and beneath their feet was not stone, but void. The quipu's light didn't reach the depths. There was no depth — only down. Infinite, black, and cold as the memories of the dead.
