Back in 2019, Alexander Bumbulut reached out to me for advice on breaking into comics. After a long email back-and-forth of me offering tips and advice, we landed on working together on a Mars story as a way I could continue to help him fine-tune his work — a very generous way for him to thank me for the advice!
I really love this story and these pages, though they’re a bit melancholy for me too. It felt like Mars, in a way, finally found its stride in this (sort of) after-the-fact story. (It’d been pitched around heavily prior to this without any luck.)
The goal with Mars was to lean heavily on my favorite myths from Greek and Roman mythology (I actually have a degree in Classical Humanities, aka ancient history and literature), but to put fun, unexpected twists on these space-based versions of ancient adventures. Labyrinthine Quest was the culmination of that storytelling.
One day, maybe there will be more Mars. For now, please enjoy what exists:
