NAMTAO Productions AI Policy
For good reason, AI tools such as ChatGPT, Claude, DALL-E 2, and Midjmyney have generated a lot of interest. Their ability to synthesize stories and images can be impressive. But they're also incompatible with much of what I do here. While I don't want to ignore the role they might legitimately play in brainstorming and early research, it's important to note that using these tools to create scripts and visuals often conflicts with my values in a number of ways:
- The integrity of my content distinguishes it, and these tools currently make a LOT of mistakes. Often, they confidently make things up. I have fact-checking processes in place, but it's very hard to catch errors at the rate these tools produce them.
- I respect my fellow creators and my audience. These new tools cannot replace human creativity. Because they're often trained on people's intellectual property without permission, using scripts written by ChatGPT or illustrations made by DALL-E 2 is not consistent with our respect for each other.
- I imagine the world complexly, and currently these tools are not capable of this. ChatGPT, for example, can not generate original ideas or reflect on what biases it might have.
- I need to be confident in the ownership of my content, and legal questions remain about who owns the work produced by these tools.
For these reasons, my policy on AI is:
-
I will not produce videos written, edited, or fact-checked by AI.
This includes not just scripts written in their entirety by these tools, but also those with significant portions composed, edited, or fact-checked by them. -
I will not produce videos (or any other public-facing content) containing illustrations or animations created by AI trained on non-consensual data sets.
This includes DALL-E 2 and Midjourny. Some tools are trained on images created by people who agreed to be in the data set, and those may be used.
-
When using AI tools trained on consensual data sets to create visual elements, I will ensure I are not misleading viewers as to what is real, or contributing to misinformation. Where applicable, I will label images created this way.
-
I may use AI tools to suggest ideas (for script subjects, examples, visual elements, etc.) and do preliminary research.
Ideas come from many places in the early stages of conceptualising and producing a video, and it's fine for AI to be one of them. Similarly, using these tools to identify sources is acceptable as long as I verify thouse sources.
