BREAKING NEWS UPDATE: Suspicious package not a bomb

Midland Police ruled that a suspicion package left in the Academy Sports & Outdoor parking lot was not a pipe bomb, but rather part of a larg-scale hide-and-seek game, known as "geocaching."

Police discovered the bundle earlier this afternoon when they were alerted by store employees that a suspicion man had left a package in the store's parking lot, located east of Loop 250 at 5300 West Wadley Avenue.

The parking lot was roped off for about two hours, and shoppers ordered to stay inside the store until a bomb squad could inspect the bundle.

With the aid of a robot, bomb squad members discovered the bundle was a "geocache" package, not an explosive device.

In geocaching, players use global positioning system (GPS) equipment to locate packages left by other players.

According to police, the Academy incident was the second time in about a year a geochache bundle has caused a bomb scare in Midland, the first coming at the CEED Building.
