Weeknotes 2026-W14 › If you have a cold, DO NOT COME INTO MY OFFICE. Full stop. [01KQ]

My wife and I had a nice Easter holiday planned, which we had to cancel due to my falling ill immediately at the end of term and not recovering for two weeks. I am so tired and exhausted, I have to say that I am absolutely gutted by the fact that I will not have had any rest or recuperation until mid-June at the earliest.

The problem is that my students insist on coming into my office when they have a cold or the flu. One of them laughed at me when I suggested they might wear a mask… But the consequences are real. I am open to suggestions on what I might say to get it through their mental barriers that THEY ARE NOT TO EVER COME INTO CONTACT WITH ME IF THEY HAVE A COLD. I tell my students in Lecture the same thing — that they should stay home if they have the cold/flu rather than spreading their disgusting condition to all their peers, but to no avail.

There is a toxic culture of “accepting” that everyone will get the same cold or flu at the beginning and end of every term. It’s actually not necessary. This is easily preventable with just a tiny bit of care. Sorry for the tirade: I’m just still furious, and absolutely gutted by the fact that I shall have had no rest prior to the start of Term as a result of this culture.
